Question about Tesco Mobile sim cards

I'm on PAYG with Tesco Mobile value tariff - calls 15p min, texts 5p.
However I am going abroad on Monday and I need to take my phone to call the apartment person when we arrive, but the value tariff doesn't work abroad. I called Tesco to upgrade it which they said they would, but I can't go back to the value tariff when I come back as they are phasing it out.
So - the question is do I upgrade anyway and just stay on standard tariff or should I buy another sim and use that abroad? I can't see how much the sim cards are on their website and whether they have any credit on them, does anybody know?
I'm just wondering which would be cheaper.

I would just change to standard, and call them when you come back to switch back.
If they refuse, then just move to Asda mobile at 8p per minute & 4p per text.
They may even match the tariff if you threaten to move.I'm on PAYG with Tesco Mobile value tariff - calls 15p min, texts 5p.

Thanks, I just called them actually as I looked at the sims in the store and they have no credit on them.
I didn't realise Asda did phones, that's even cheaper than Tesco. I might stay in this tariff now though as the Value one wouldn't let me receive picture messages. Do you know if the Asda one does?0
