Can I be scammed by buyer who pays by bank transfer?

  • Duh? If you pay a seller by bank transfer, you have no comeback with eBay/Paypal if they scam you.

This is eBay 101, it's not difficult.

Before paypal was forced onto ebay, many buyers paid by cheque and they would have bank account name, number, sort code, bank, your name, address, telephone number, email address and your signature!!!! It was safe

Any payment method is open to abuse. So saying something is totally safe is not exactly true. Everyone should be keeping a constant eye on their bank account and looking for anything strange going on. People who are complacent are the ones who get scammed.

And even though if someone sets up a direct debit, you can get the money back, it could still cause a lot of problems for you. What if you didn't have enough money left to cover your mortgage, car insurance, house insurance, etc? Hardly no big deal.

So while accepting payment by bank transfer is probably going to be safe, it's because most people are honest, not because no one can do anything with you bank account details.

I know. But other posters were discussing the reverse.

Of course every payment method is open to abuse, I bought and sold on ebay using cheques and postal orders for years and never had a problem. Your post 10 above is inferring that nobody should be giving their bank details (cheque or transfer) on ebay as the other person will also get a lot of other details.

You may wish to infer that, but it wasn't what I was implying.

Just exercise caution as to who you give your bank details to.

I don't really think that's such an unreasonable thing to say.

So who is going to post their bank details?

And as someone buying on eBay would have rather more than just the seller's bank account details, I'll also need your name, address, telephone number and email address.

The only things you need to make a bank transfer UK>UK is the bank account number and sort code. You don't need a name  , address  , telephone no. or email address   .

But if you buy or sell something on eBay, the other person can find out your name, address, telephone number, and email address. I didn't say you needed those things to do a bank transfer.

 <---I can do this too.
