Can I be scammed by buyer who pays by bank transfer?

I sold something on Ebay but buyer asked me if he could transfer money to my bank account instead of using Paypal. His paypal account is limited.

Can I get scammed by this? I need to tell gim my Bank account number + sort code.

I only know that as buyer, you should NOT pay by bank transfer.

Can you do something with the account if you know account number+sort code?? I am afraid he is a con and will use hack my account.

    Why not as a buyer?

Have you ever given anyone a cheque? Did you worry when you gave them a cheque? A cheque carries the same info as what is needed for bank transfer, the only differences are that on cheque you also give them a perfect example of your signature too.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

    Jeremy Clarkson would disagree:

    No.

    Safe and free.

    Why not?

Have you been brainwashed by ebay into thinking paypal is the *only* safe way to pay for anything??

I've done dozen of money transfers via ebay without a hitch. It also stops paypal getting any fees, which is always a good thing.

But remains the same, the people could have done exactly the same with a cheque.

But Clarkson could get it back with the direct debit guarantee. I believe in the end he let the donation remain that someone had made to a charity "on his behalf".

As has been said you give more info on a cheque.

This is a dream buyer - no fees fron Paypal and no chance of a chargeback. They are taking all of the risk here.

He could have got the lot back by invoking the direct debit guarantee, but he chose to waive that right. So as a scare story it's really not that scary.

  • Thanks guy,
I was just worried too much about it since buyer insisted to pay by bank transfer only. I also totally forgot that the details we will give out are as about same as Cheque.

So who is going to post their bank details?

And as someone buying on eBay would have rather more than just the seller's bank account details, I'll also need your name, address, telephone number and email address.

Before paypal was forced onto ebay, many buyers paid by cheque and they would have bank account name, number, sort code, bank, your name, address, telephone number, email address and your signature!!!! It was safe
