Yup. I'd also agree that a good secondhand bike can be a far better buy than a new one. You may have a point about the cycling experience I suppose, although I'm not sure that the very young would notice.

I guess we're pretty much thinking on the same wavelength though, as on balance I might favour a Dawes or a Giant from Chain Reaction or Wiggle. Some people might question whether the extra £25 was worth it. Having given it some thought I'd say, "yes."

We are on the same wavelength, so for the avearge kid a Raleigh bike from Halfrauds is bang on, but for anyone who plans to use their bikes more seriously or for regular cycles then spend a few quid more, the bike will be safer, will last longer and ultimately the cycling experience will be noticably much better.

I just hope Nicole Cooke doesn't hear us saying that Halfords and Raleigh are rubbish. She seems to have done OK by them.

    Nite.
  • Well... I walked out of Halfords last Friday with cash in my pocket to buy a bike because when I asked for service and asked to wait.... was waiting 15 minutes while the same member of staff talked to his mate. Bike bit was on the second floor, downstairs there was three members just leaning against the till.... me and my money went out of the shop and I will never use them again and suggest that any of you avoid the Brislington store in Bristol as they dont care about the customer.

As an addition, the T & C's posted by 'KLB' does not say it excludes bikes... I wouldnt shop there again even for 15% off but maybe use it as a barganing tool to use in a local bike shop which I intend to do this weekend!

Went into our Halfords a few weeks ago and they had lots of posters advertising this deal, but NO raleigh bikes in stock!
They also had a poster up saying same day assembly if you pay before noon, and when we asked about a bike they said it would take them 5 days to assemble it!!
Cheap deals, but pretty poor quality at the very bottom end (so spend a bit more if you can afford it) and don't expect great service.

I cycled to Halfords a few weeks ago for some bits and pieces. I couldn't see any racks outside, so I asked a member of staff where I could lock my bike. "Lock it to one of the lamposts" I was told. My D lock wouldn't fit around the lampost, so I just left.

I was surprised that the largest seller of bikes in the UK doesn't have bike parking outside.

The Raleigh Micro X 12" for £54.99 (was £109.99) is a bit unrealistic. We got this for our 3 year old a couple of years ago for sixty odd pounds and I don't think it was in a sale at the time.

Check the 50% claims with other retailers before buying!

Amazon often have Raleigh bikes at around the discounted same price (though not at the moment...), so it is worth shopping around a bit. I'd say these are good deals, but not 'half-price'.

Yep, customer service is Halfords is abysmal. I've waited ages to be served on many occasions.
  • With the extra 10% off a boys 16" Raleigh is working out to be around £58. I don't want to spend more than this - is it worth getting a raleigh or would a cheaper brand (say on Amazon) suffice?
