You can also reserve online and pick up in store and still get the discount which is handy... all though it appears its no longer 10% of all online orders.

This thread maybe of some use, showing an extra 15% off available from 6th September in Halfords stores.

Good spot if you're looking for a cheap bike, but having bought cheap bikes from Halfords and then paying a bit more for better quality bikes, I feel able to say that its worth paying more for a higher spec bike, especially when bought from a local bike shop who will build the bike properly and give you sound advice and after care.

Generally I would agree. As a rule it's always better to get a good name, frame, wheels and components. (perhaps not quite true with MTBs and crossers because it's better to mash cheap components than expensive ones.) And Halford are well known among the cycling fraternity for being pretty rubbish.

But to be fair, we're talking about kids' bikes here. My five year old is more interested in staying upright at the moment. He couldn't care less whether his bike is a Raleigh or a Bianchi, as long as the brakes work and he can ride it down the stream. And in two years time he'll be too big for it anyway. What's the likelihood of having to visit the LBS for a five year old's bike? Pretty slim I'd say.

I agree to a certain extent, been there with my older children, but now I know a little bit more about Halfrauds and bikes in general, I would rather pay a little bit more or buy a decent secondhand bike, the cycling experience is just a world of difference and cheap bikes can put children off cycling forever.

But I accept that 90% won't give a damn about the points i've raised and they look as good in front of the xmas tree.

Yup. I'd also agree that a good secondhand bike can be a far better buy than a new one. You may have a point about the cycling experience I suppose, although I'm not sure that the very young would notice.

I guess we're pretty much thinking on the same wavelength though, as on balance I might favour a Dawes or a Giant from Chain Reaction or Wiggle. Some people might question whether the extra £25 was worth it. Having given it some thought I'd say, "yes."
