First Time Renting

My partner and I are saving to move out and rent next year. Being in Zone 4 of London, rent is about £800+ for a one bedroom.

Can anyone help and give me an idea of the likely bills and amounts to expect?

Also, should we get a joint account to manage this or still with separate accounts?

Thanks

  • Depends a bit on council tax bands. Which bit of zone 4?

  • I'd estimate, if it has gas heating / hot water, and a water meter, something like these figures per month:

    gas - £35
    electricity - £25
    water - £35

TV licence would be the same, about £11 a month, wherever you rent. Council tax depends on the band and the council. You will also need contents insurance. With gas heating / hot water, you will obviously use less in the summer and more in the winter, but that's an average type of amount.

You would also be able to reduce these amounts a bit if you are careful with energy.

Read that thread and make notes on it

Have a quick browse of www.shelter.org.uk

Do not pay your deposit or ANY rent in cash.
Ensure you get in writing any repairs or fixtures planned DURING your initial and future tenancy with a penalty clause (reduced rent) if there is a delay, if you can swing it.

  • Aren't you the one that asks this question every few months?

Edit: Ooh just beaten by Sooz.
  • hehe
get a joint account which you both put a fixed amount into each month to pay mortgage, all bills and maybe food shopping if you feel like it. keep your own separate accounts to have your wages paid into and all your own bills coming out of (mobile phones, gym etc).
when opening a joint account, easiest thing is usually to open one with a bank one of you has your current account with.

Thankyou for that info - much appreciated
  • I think I am right in saying that you are 22 if the 86 at the end of your name is an indicator at least.
I have to say I did move out of home when I was 16 only 2 weeks before my 17th birthday to the day! I thought about it ALOT but in the end did what I felt was right. I had just over £210 at first and my share of rent was £130  . Share of TV licence for a year was around £26 for the year (there were 5 of us). Eleki was £30 on average a 1/4 each but we had NO gas. CT over all was about £30 each for a 3 bed flat in the Medway area.
We had no home phone or internet (TV licence WAS our luxury :rotfl: ). Mobile is whatever you make it due to contract/PAYG. It depends really. Not many peoples out goings are the same as others really.

To be honest seeing the amount of time you are taking I'd say your hesitating (sp?) on the matter and if that IS the case moving out is NOT going to work for you right now. Just please make up your mind on what you want to do :p .

I'm back at parents now after nearly 2 years as the place I moved to fell apart :rotfl: . Renting is NOT my fav thing and I'm saving for a deposit on a house now (I'm 19) .
I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy :D
