Undersized car parking spaces

You wont believe what happened to me this weekend.
I parked in a car park where the space was undersized.
ie The car tyre over hung the white lines of the space.

I didnt think much of it as I was not obstructing any cars and there was plenty of room for cars to manouvre.

I bought a car park ticket and did my shopping. When I got back I noticed I had something on my windscreen.

Strange I thought. I am sure I payed and displayed but reading the ticket I notice the reason was the car was over the white lines.

Needless to say I am contesting this fine.

  • Were they over the lines on both sides?

For ticket/appeal advice, ask Tam Durkin, he gave me some good advice. You'll find him on the anything else board on my or his parking ticket threads

  • The space was too short therefore i overhung on the front by about 1 foot. The space was against a wall in the corner. I think the planners were trying to maximize the number of spaces.
Technically they should have hatched it off or signed it for small vehicles/motorbikes only.
  • tam used to be a TW, so ask him what technicality you can get them on ;D ;D

There was an article in the Telegraph a couple of weeks back about the new Ford Focus commenting on how it has got bigger. One of the points in the article was that the minimum legal width for onstreet parking is 180cm, however the new Focus is 184cm wide. If your tyres overhang the white line you can get a ticket, therefore it would be illegal to park it anywhere where the spaces were no bigger than the legal minimum.

As for your ticket, I would say you are probably out of luck.

  • As luck has it my wife works in traffic management.
She has found out that a standard length for a parking space is 4.8m long. The space i was parked in was 3.2m long.
I am not too bothered about width as I am happy my car was within these lines.

Anyway I have sent the letter out disputing the fine and I will let you know the result.

    Watch this space.
  • In some of the supermarkets my little Peugeot 205 has just about fit into the marked out spaces!

They have re-done one of the car parks in town and my 309 actually length-wise is too long for the spaces?!

    I wouldn't call that a big car ....... or a big space really. :-/
Watch out people. You don't know what lurks around the corner for you![/SIZE]
  • To add a bit of a depressing note to this thread from my point of view. I visited the place where I got a ticket previously and noticed a traffic warden.

I was a bit !!!!!! off about my previous ticket so i went up to him and quizzed him about it. I wasnt rude or confrontational. Just to the point. He was very unhelpful so i walked away steaming inside.

The problem is that his response had made me so mad I forgot to get a pay and display ticket (which are free by the way) so he gave me another parking ticket :-[ :-[ :'(:'(:'( >:( >:(

It was my own fault and I am sure there is a moral somewhere.
