What I wanna know is, if slugs like young tender plants, why don't they eat the weeds when they are young and tender too?

    because they are evil!!!!!!!!!!

Weeds obviously don't taste as nice.

Hmmm....re the bit in first post that slugs dont like brambles....errr....well summat loves my blackberry plant in a pot I've got - loadsa holes in most of the leaves....unless slugs hate it - but its snails that are having a go. Something certainly regards that plant as breakfast, lunch and dinner:mad:

Have just put out some alchemilla mollis seedling and ivyleaved toadflax ditto - and can spot slimy trails going across the earth already and they've certainly had a go at the alchemilla mollis that had self-seeded itself out back.

Well thanks very much guys, my slugs are obviously sneaking off somewhere to catch up on this thread as they have now started having ago at my tomatoes...:rotfl:

Or is it because there's nothing much else around that they like? Hmmmmm...

Anyway I've got to get moving and dismantle my old greenhouse anyway so good luck to them (unless I actually see them in which case they get turned into Slugkebab)

Think I will install a salt water moat around my lovely new one which hubbie has stumped up for my anniversary (today!) present

Any suggestions for specific veggie varieties which seem less slug tasty?

  • my grandad used to put scooped out orange peel down in halves... the slugs get inside because of the wet then you just move them elsewhere! friendly to slugs and does not cost a lot!

    To the bird table.

I've heard somewhere that slugs and snails have a homing instinct.

i splashed out on a gardening magazine because it specifically mentioned slug attack remedies....They basically concluded that most of the organic methods which rely on stuff they don't like to crawl over etc surprise surprise don't work!
Only two things did work with a 9/10.....slug pellets which lets face it are the method of last resort for most of us and bran

believe me to slugs its more attractive than Hostas they love it, and apparently it swells up inside them, but you don't get that horrible slug battle field in the morning just mostly untouched veg....unfortunately it needs to be renewed after the rain and it makes the veg patch look a bit...odd? as it needs to be covered in the stuff.....

They find it irresistable though and i have to admit to going out with my stick a few times....

I don't think the worst is over either practically everything i have moved today in the garden has had slug eggs under it....
