My 70 yr old partially sighted (in one eye - the other eye is no use) Mum gets the bus most days to go 12 miles to work in a shop from 9 to 5.30.
Take on board the advice here and take a leap of faith in your own capabilities, you CAN do this!

    I have done reading too!

  • Presumably your DLA mobility allowance is supposed to be spent on being mobile!

Because obviously, I don't have a life outside college and don't go out.
Also, I find, if you stand at the bus stop (do a dummy run in the daylight so you can see where it is  ) then the buses will stop and you can ask the driver if it is the correct one?

Where I live, they only stop if either someone presses the bell or someone (at the bus stop) indicates to driver.

Anyway, it's sorted now.(ish) Well, they've said I can have the taxis for winter and then I'm going to have to make my own way after winter. They did offer me a bus pass, but I already have one.
Do you know how long you have to wait for your mobility training?

No. All I've been told is that there are another 26/27 on the list above me. I have now been told to ignore that letter.
she doesn't even rely upon the bus driver to tell her when to get off

I don't need that kind of help for college. I have to get the bus into town where I'd normally get off anyway and the sign for college isn't possible to miss. (loads of people get off at that stop anyway)

Are you seriously trying to tell us that a bus will not stop if someone is stood at the stop and/or you cannot see/hear a bus coming towards you?

If you really cannot see the bus coming then ask the bus company to stop at that particular stop for you - simple as!

People like you make it much more difficult for others with a disability!
  • Bit difficult to see the bus if it's dark. And there's never anyone else at the bus stop at 7.30 when I'm there.

Like I've already said, the bus doesn't stop at a bus stop just because there's someone there.

If you tell the bus company that there will be someone there at that time of the day who needs assistance then they should stop. Also, the bus will have lights on it which will be really bright, if you can't see that then I think you need to get your sight re-assessed.
  • I did recently have my sight assessed and am having it done again soon. My problem is, that I'm really light sensitive and bright lights really hurt.
  • do you actually want help or not? everyone has been offering good advice but you are just being deliberately difficult now.

either take their advice and try and sort something out, or just shut up.

i understand it must be difficult being partially sighted but there are things you could do instead of just expecting for more financial help on top of what you are already receiving.
  • If your light sensitive then surely you can see/feel the lights?

Then mobility training isn't going to help you and I don't see what the issue is with the fact that you have to wait for it. I'm assuming you have retinitis pigmentosa if you specifically struggle to see in the dark and your sight is going to get progressively worse, although your name suggests it may be albinism. I have worked with people with both these conditions affecting them to varying degrees and ALL of them would have been able to make that journey (even if some of them, like you, perhaps didn't believe that they could) You say that you now have the taxi for winter and so the fact that you struggle in the dark is no longer an issue but I would just like to add that a cane goes a long way to educating people that you may need special consideration, bus drivers will have done disibility training and chances are they would therefore stop for you whether you have specifically signalled to them or not. I don't want to preach to you, and I'm not sure you will listen anyway, but if your condition is progressive then please be grateful for what sight you have now and the opportunities for independence it gives you. I have worked with so many young people who would have loved to have your 40% vision.
