can i burn waxy pine cones on fire

Anyone know if it is safe to burn the closed solid type of pine cones on an open fire? They are quite wet and oozing waxy stuff but I have oodles and wonder if I dry them I can add to my fire?

I dont have an open fire myself but I wouldnt have thought it would be a good idea, I can imagine they would be prone to popping and spitting as they burn. Especially if they have a lot of resin in them.
