As someone who works for Barclays I take great pride in getting things right for customers and am personally disapointed when we dont.

Don't you mean getting things left?

I have a left hand cheque book from Barclays & have had one for many years, one of their very few good points (In my opinion).

I am pleased to hear they are trying to get things better for their customers but I doubt they will tackle serious areas of concern for us left or right handed!

For example: Why do they not try a bit harder to get the cheque clearing system improved? Less people are using less cheques yet they take longer to clear than they used to! I have recently been told by good old Barclays that you cannot rely on a customers cheque having been cleared even after 2 weeks as they rely on the Royal Mail to deliver them! My company can't afford to accept credit card payments & some customers can't pay by BACS so we are stuck with the antiquated cheque system. Any suggestions Cheeky Charlie?

As someone who works for Barclays I take great pride in getting things right for customers and am personally disapointed when we dont. I have taken on board the mail in realtion to the bill board in Dundee almost 100 miles from your nearest branch. I will be forwarding this on within the bank and will advise of the response I get. Barclays is at this very moment going through a re-branding programme amied at making us a more user friendly bank, injecting a little fun in appropriate places to help us achieve this.

For example we are replacing chained pens in branches with open boxes of pens asking people to take one to keep, the boxes have things like "Look Mum no chains" printed on the side , and the pens themselves have "Borrowed from Barclays" on them.

As long as I have worked there, we have had left handed cheque books and the current poster campaign is all part of the re-branding to highlight some of the services we offer that customer may not be aware of.

Did you know that Barclays is the fisrt bank in the UK to offer a DRIVE THRU ATM service, ( please note all ATM's are having signage udated to say "HOLE IN THE WALL" another way we are responding to customer speak).

Have fun and enjoy your banking,

    Cheeky Charlie

Despite the fairly blatant plug for Barclays, it's good to see that at least some staff in the banking industry still have a genuine interest in customer service, rather than 'sales'. :T

Also well done Barclays for publicising the fact that left-handed cheque books are available. A number of people have posted on this thread to the effect that they are left-handed and would like one, but didn't know about them. More publicity should mean a better take-up, reducing the average unit cost. So if you are left-handed and don't have a left-handed cheque book, ring your bank and ask for one now!
  • all the other lefties out their if you havent found it yet - check this site out lots of leftie info - explains alot !!!!

  • I know that before i left halifax they had brought out a cheque book that works for both lefties and righties. can anyone confirm this??
    :santa2:
  • I'm have an account with 4 banks and according to this thread they all do leftie cheque books!!! Why when they see me signing the form did they not offer me a left one then, I just assumed such luxuries didn't exist! But that's why so few are issued, they should offer you the choice. I don't use many cheques so I won't bother ordering any new ones.

Sorry I got the figures completely wrong, I don't even know where I got the £50k from! However have dug up the email reply re the left hand thing:

    "Dear Mr XXX,

Further to your message of 17th September, I have been in contact with our
    cheque production team.

Whilst in the population in general the percentage of left handed people is
around 10%, the percentage of personal cheque books issued
that are left handed is less than 2%. On this basis and the fact that over
the last 12 months the Society ordered 1.92 million FlexAccount books, the
expected volume of left handed books would probably not exceed 38,000 books
    per annum.

Those Building Societies / Banks that have introduced left handed cheque
books did so to provide "service" but, in retrospect, have doubts about the
real value of so doing. The current charge for the right handed cheque book
is 23.4p. The charge for the above volume of left handed cheque books would
be 69.4p. As a mutual company we do need to be mindful of where to spend
our members money so the decision not to produce these types of books was
    made.

Not only is it the charge for the printing of the books there would also be
additional set up charges as every print working would need to be amended
and new printing plates produced for the new book style - example, the
cheque counterfoil would be at the other end of the document.

I am sorry this is not the answer you had hoped for, but if I can be of any
    further assistance, please contact me."

I have had an HSBC leftie chequebook for years, but I want to know if only 10% of the population are left-handed, why am I, my brother & sister all left-handed & we have three left handed photocopier technicians where I work & no right handed ones( look out we're taking over) Are we really the only ones in our right mind
  • Hi
Royal Bank of Scotland do left handed books too. I have one, but after years of having to conform to a righthanded world, I find they awkward. I mentioned to the bank that if they had cheque books that opened at the top, they would suit both left and right hander folk, the reply was they are too expensive. Bank is USA have them - if watching tv is anything to go by.

In the interest of fair play, there are other web sites as well for left-handed people, mine for example!!!! https://www.leftshoponline.co.uk
Re cheque books, I know that HSBC and Lloydstsb were the first to produce them and then Barclays and Natwest followed quite a while later. It did amaze me that, whilst thye were happy to pro
int left-handed cheque books, it appeared too difficult for them to produce left-handed paying-in books! Surely it just needed the print plate info to be changed?!

Yes I used to think the same... the HSBC have now solved this one by abolishing paying-in books altogether, so now we're all equal...
