Also, has anyone notice the anti-leftie placement of chip 'n' pin machines. Boots for example have them stuck on the wrong side of the till!

I noticed in M&S the other day that the chip and pin machines are actually by your left hand!
  • I drove past a billboard poster the other day stating Barclays now offer left handed cheque books

Had a good laugh at this as we too have this Billboard in Dundee, Scotland - yes it's and English bank in Scotland, but alas the nearest branches to my knowledge to Dundee are :-

Aberdeen a mere 92 miles away approx

Edinburgh a mere 60 miles away approx

Glasgow a mere 102 !!! miles away according to their website!

Just as well im amphibious - or is it ambidextrous?

(i have a horn and a tail and 3 eyes according to my kids so which one is it ?)

PS if you need to locate your nearest branch here is the link:-

    http://www.multimap.com/clients/places.cgi?client=barclays
Might be useful to someone in England as its no use here in Scotland (long live RBS)

However Nationwide are still the best is you travel a fair bit. Also I do like the fact they are a mutual, rather than a plc (although that really shouldn't mean much), but as the well worn saying goes: Proud to be different!!

However they have no branches in Jersey, which is a major problem for me.

Have you looked at First Direct, they are pretty good, and they are doing a £50 offer if you switch bank accounts.

Do you know if Nat West bank in Jersey still do the cheque books with views of the island on them? I always had the plain ones when I lived there, still do, for the £34 still left in my Jersey bank account. Hoping my lottery winnings will join the £34 one day, in a sufficiently large amount!

That is very interesting pin, thanks for digging out their reply.

So only 2% of cheque books issued are left-handed ones, while the population has 10% left-handers. I think this is probably because some banks don't do them (e.g. Nationwide!), and because people don't know about them. I would think that any left-hander that knows about them would ask for one, they are so much easier!

Cost of left-handed cheque book according to Nationwide = 69.4p
Cost of right-handed cheque book according to Nationwide = 23.4p

69.4 - 23.4 = 46p hardly an extortionate amount to keep those lefty customers happy...

    :)
I'm a leftie and never seen the need for a left-handed cheque book (I'd prefer to send money electronically if I could and get annoyed with companies sending refunds etc by cheque).

Personally, I like Nationwide's answer - if there was enough demand then they would offer the service; however, they're more focused on keeping costs down - something any MSE should be proud of.
  • i'm left handed and have a natwest left handed cheque book and paying in book, it makes life so much easier, but its good to see the look of total confusion on the counter staffs faces when you try to pay a cheque in and they dont know which way to open the paying in book.
also i am an upside down left hander ( i hold my pen so the end is facing away from me ......if you're a lefty you will know what i mean), and i find that many shops which still have the old "sign your name" for your credit/debit card purchases machines, mean that i have to lean on the key pads to sign and end up hitting loads of other buttons and sending the machines mad !!!
i still find the position of pens in the banks a major pain in the neck as well

Re: pens in banks. I've found it easier just to carry a pen with me when I have to make that occasional visit to the bank.

So should the righties now complain? :rotfl:

I am a leftie myself, never had a problem touching my code into a chip and pin machine

As to cheques: Have a 'rightie' cheque book. I hardly ever write a cheque, if I do, I tear it out to fill in, and on the stub, I just record the amount (if anything)

Agree with the 'who uses cheques these day comments', last year when I picked up my Christmas turkey was surprised to find that my previous cheque had been for the same purpose prior year!!

Anyway, being a leftie the only issue I have ever had with my cheque book is writing the details on the stub. I consider my Nationwide cheque book to be ambidextrous in that the fields are arranged vertically so you just lean on the (unused) cheques to fill in the details, whether you are right or left handed.

    Have I missed something?

I'm a leftie and have always just put up with the awkwardness of writing the stub on a cheque book.

Saying that, I can't remeber the last time I used a cheque, I'm still only half-way through one I've had since 2002 :)
