Home dog boarding service

Hi

I rehomed a dog a few months ago and we are due to go away in November for a few days. I dont want to put him into kennels whilst we are away as I dont want him to think he has been abandoned. I am looking for a home boarding service, this is where people look after dogs in 'their' own home rather than the pet sitting service which is done in my home. The only information I can find on one near me has an incorrect phone number. I have also contacted Petpals but they havnt got back to me at all.

I would be very grateful for any help. I live in County Durham.

I do that but I'm in the South.
Try the National Association of Registered Pet sitters and carers. NARP
    http://www.dogsit.com/listofsitters.html

Petpals usually charge a fortune and take ages to call back if they call back at all!

Try also yellow pages. Pet sitters / Pet services even under kennels as they might be under that heading.

You should visit the carer with the dog before hand so the dog gets to know the carer, the house smells etc... also make sure that you are happy with the carer before you leave your dog.

What sort of dog is it btw?

I would rather have someone through word of mouth than just advertise and leave my dog with anyone.

Well I can provide about 120 references from dogs and owners... :D
Do you mind the long drive all the way down to Portsmouth? Oh... and do you mind if we allow him on the sofa?

Try finding a local dogwalker - my last 2 have both done home boarding. You could then get the walker to walk dog a few times so that you both were comfortable with situation.

Your local vet might know of someone local to you, or perhaps even during your walks with your dog, ask the other dog owners they might know or recommend someone.

Thanks for the great help. I missed your first post Annando. My reply wasnt to you. Im going to check that site out now.

My dog isnt loyal and faithful at all so he will stay with anyone who will stroke him. He is a staffordshire bull terrier but he is a very good one. Even the vet wants to keep him as he is so good and not at all flighty or noisy. I dont mind him being on the couch, he loves cuddles. I tried the vets already and all they could give me was the number for canine capers. I will also try local dog walkers. If all else fails we need to travel to Folkstone to go away so maybe ill get back to you Annando :)

I had a look at that website but you have to subscribe before it will give me any details. There is only one within 10 miles of me.
