Tv Has Sound But Black Screen

Don't know if anyone has any ideas about this but I have sky tv and a video and I cannot get a picture but I have sound, Its completely black.

I reconnected a loose scart socket and it started to work again but then I don't know what I have done but its back to black again even though theres no loose wires now ect. I have tried all the wires, unplugged, replugged swtched everything off ect and all I have is sound ande black screen. If I change channels it will change but theres nothing else but the black screen and sound, not even the sky info bar. I don't know if I have changed some setting either on the remote or anywhere else

I dont want to call sky as they will charge I would rather unsubscribe. I do have a spare portable tv to test it with if nes but it has no scart socket as its an old one so I don't think I can test with that can I? Another thing is all this testing and things is made so much harder because the tv, sky box and video are in a tv cupboard and in a really squashed in corner so swapping tvs moving and adjusting wires is very awkward but if it has to be done it does. If it turns out to be the tv itself and I definitely need a tv with a scart socket for it to work I'll have to unsubscribe coz I can't get a new tv so no point paying for something I can't see, just want to try everything first. Any ideas?
Thanx

  • Is there no picture on terrestial either?
Can you get any picuture on the screen...ie whitnoise, channel numbers, menu perhaps?
If you can't sounds like your tube's gone. Bye bye tv.

If I hit menu on the tv remote it comes up, I can even change the settings if I want as I tried adjusting the brightness just in case but no change. It comes up cable or av in top left corner and shows the number 6 but thats about it.

Oh yes I can't test terrestrial because I don't have an aerial so I only use sky but theres no fuzzy picture or light at all its just black

have a look at your scarts again and see if there is any pins pushed in more than others cos each pin has a purpose to wot it controls (dont ask me wot mind you;) )

to test with analogue just get a coat hanger and place it in the old style ariel socket, you should get some sort of picture out of your tv, even if it is white noise ( screen is all fuzzy) dont forget to unplug all the scarts first as these will over ride any analogue signals.
if you have white noise then your tube hasnt gone.
what tv is it? how old?
what scart leads have you got ? the ones that came with sky?

what happens when you try and play a video and is the video on scart?

did you plug the scarts back into their right places on the back of your tv or by mistake did you put them in the wrong way? as in the video scart into the scart which before had the sky scart?

  • Sounds like your tv is fine, just a connection somewhere or a setting to the display type.
This could be a problem with the skybox scart socket, the scart lead, the tv scart socket, or video display setting on the tv.

My sky did that the other day. I switched it off at the plug, took the card out and polished it on my sleeve and then put it back in and switched it all on again and it worked.

Only one scart had come out a bit so i havent mixed any of those up and I cannot play a video either, I already tried. Just a bit scared of forgetting where all the wires go if I unplug everything but I'll give it a go, I have a small round indoor aerial I could try too. The video has a scart on it too I only ever had the ones from sky, I never brought any anyway but they may have used ones that came with the tv or video too I'm not sure. When I used to turn off my sky box before the tv it always had the white noise before I eventually turned the tv one off and thats not happening now. Its a bit weird though how it came on perfectly fine after putting that scart lead back in. I've got a spare scart lead at home I could swap them too in case its a prob with that.

If the tvs gone do I definitely need a scart lead tv or can I get an adaptor?

Oh yes its a Bush 2023T/A if thats any use, its quite a few years old now, can't rem exactly but maybe around 10 years even

    sorry to say
it sounds like your tv has served its purpose, 10 years believe it or not is a good length of time for a tv nowdays.
i would start saving for a new tv if i were you, if money is tight and you can get a 0% on purchases credit card, i would look to buy one at one of the big supermarkets as it comes up to xmas they always have cheap offers on tvs.
i would make sure it is has scart as sky digital will not work through your ariel.

just thought, a couple tv's ago i had the same problem, the scart connector at the back of my tv had become loose on the main tv circuit board, i couldt be bothered getting it fixed ( any excuse to get a new tv) so i gave it to a mate, he paid £20 to a tv repair man who solderd the scart connector back onto the board, he has had that tv for 5 years now with no problems.

    that may be a solution.

Well I've disconnected everything from the tv altogether (my room now looks like steptoes yard) and I then plugged the tv in on its own with the portable aerial in and nothings happening apart from a bit of sound. The screen is black even though I can get the tv menu up ect so I'm wondering if the tube has gone :( I've just took it out of the tv cupboard coz theres no point in messing with it anymore. Not sure if I'll see if anyone can mend it or not as they may charge to check anyway but I do have a spare telly but it doesnt have scart lead thingies.

Are you sure theres no way of getting some kind of adaptor to use the old tv with it? coz I can't get a tv now its too near christmas. I don't have an outside aerial so I was really hoping to get it working again
    Thanx

  • Can't be the tube or you wouldn't get the menu up, but with cheap 20 inch tv's from about £70 repairs are probably not the best bet.
