Increasing Laptop Harddrive capacity

Hello All,

I have just got a new Laptop and after transferring everything over from the old computer I have about 10gb space left! (The harddrive is partitioned and this includes both parts - original capacity 120gb). (lots of pictures of shoes :D)

Someone has recommended either buying a stand alone external harddrive to transfer things my pictures/music to or increasing my laptop memory - which I don't know how to do.

So questions to the floor..... which option is cheaper and which option is the better one? Are there any recommended makes of external harddrive or other factors I need to consider - I imagine the price is linked to the gb you buy?

Easiest thing to do by far is use an external one.
Top makes are Western Digital And Seagate
Others that are fine are Maxtor and any of the generalised 'big' names (Hitachi, Samsung etc)

Even a 'cheapie' one would probably be ok for what your using it for but I would never recommend one as its possible they could fail at any given moment!

I'd just buy a cheap internal and stick it an external HD enclosure.

    But I'm a cheapskate.

By the external enclosure, like a normal external. Presumably USB.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

You place the internal hdd inside the external hdd enclosure.
The enclosure has all the normal external hdd connectors Firewire/usb depending on the brand .

10GB is a lot of space unless you store DVDs or tons of music on there., wait until you use it up, or tidy up what you have.
I don't think recommending someone use a hdd at a full capacity is a terribly good idea.

it isn't full, and that what it's for.
No if you use all available space you will suffer problems.

Tell you what fill your hard drive to capacity and then defrag.

Let us know when it finishes yeah. :D

  • A drive can be rammed full and still work fine, it's just a store, fill it first.
