O2 iPhone problems

I have an iPhone on the O2 network. This was bought from an O2 store at the beginning of August.

I noticed straight away that the battery on the iPhone was very poor. It didn't last a day from a full charge.

I did some diagnostics my self. I turned off 3G, wi-fi, push updates, location based services, and didn't use any of the features on the phone such as the ipod, internet, youtube etc. In essence I was just using the iPhone as a 2G phone for calling and texting.

I found that the battery would only last for 3.5 hours talktime, which for me was roughly 1.5 days as I'm not a heavy phone user.

I found this unacceptable as the iPhone website clearly states that from 2G calls you should get upto 10hrs talk time. I am clearly not getting anywhere near that.

I took the device into my Appl store to explain and give them a chance to remedy the problem. the gave me a brand new handset and advised to do the things I had already done to preserve the battery life.

The second iPhone is doing exactly the same thing. I have attempted to test by turning on the 3G services only on the phone, and I then get just over 1 days charge.

I am of the opinion that the device is not fit for purpose, and not as stated on Apple's official website.

How can I go about cancelling the contract? What are my rights?

You are probably unlucky with the replacement as well as it seems faulty. On another hand most real-world battery life experiences are way off what Apple advertised. If you do an experiment under the same tightly controlled conditions Apple did their tests under, and the battery life is found considerably poorer, you might have a claim however it's not going to be a rock solid one.

Surely you could cancel under the fact the iphone isnt doing what its meant to do or your unable to use the features, someone more experienced should be able to clarify things,

id steer clear of the iphone personally

Usually you would take whatever the manufacturer's figure on battery life and halve it on most electrical devices, however it does sound that you may have got 2 duff Iphones.

    thanks for the replies guys.

Where does this leave me? In my opinion the phone is not fit for purpose. If I can only use it as a 2G phone, and not use the functions on the phone that it was purchased for, so as not to have it run out charge while I'm no where near a plug socket, it defeats the purpose off owning it.

I may as well stick to mk Nokia. At least I can use that with out fear of running out of charge during the day.

I'm also thinking of contacting trading standards tomorrow to see what options I do have.
  • The battery in my 3G did not last very long when i first bought it but it has got much much better over time. For the first few days i made sure i ran the battery completely down every evening but playing a film etc. I then did a complete charge over night - through the plug - not through the pc.

It now lasts forever and i only charge every couple of days and even then i don't need to. Now i run the battery down every week or 10 days and then recharge.

I never recharge through the pc - was told this on apple discussion site. Also have read a couple of posts on that site that say they keep the phone plugged in whilst they are in the house and this helps battery last longer but not sure about that.

    thanks for your reply bunnydrumming.

I did all the usual things like completely discharging the battery, and I only ever charge up from the wall anyway.

Its still very poor battery life. Not happy with it at all.

As eljmayes said you probably have a faulty handset again - another Genius Bar appointment at the local Apple store would be in order, I think :)
