Best way to block certain sky channels?

Hi there,

I am not quite sure where to start...

I need to block all gambling/phone in/instant win channels available on sky - I know that I can pin lock the channels that run all the time but do I have do do the same for the channels that swich over to the above format in the middle of the night? or is there something that sky can do at their end?

Another problem is that the person coming to stay who has issues with the above also needs internet access for work (and has their own/works laptop) I take it there is anything I can do with the modem other than relocate it (so that it isn't easily acessible) and turn it off at night? I *think* both our phone sockets are masters (which caused fun and games when we moved in!) If the one that isn't easily accessible isn't a master socket will this mean that the wireless router won't work?

Sorry that is all a bit of a jumble - any help appreciated.

What's the problem with setting the ground rules when they arrive or has talking to people gone out of fashion?
  • How about buying a 20 quid freeview box for the duration of the visit?

I wish it would be that simple but when it gets to the point where someone has their house repossesed because they can't moderate their behaviour - what chance do I stand when they have nothing left to lose?

The chances of her admitting she has a problem are slim to say the least.

Length of stay - how long is a piece of string? We have no airel so without spending money getting one installed. I was hoping there would be something that we could do with what we aleady have.
  • How would you stop them using internet gambling sites? You could also take the sky card out at night :)

lmao - See the state I am in?! I missed the most simple option of all!!

Re internet access The 2nd socket ( the one that I think is a master is in our bedroom) so if I could relocate it here then I could turn it off at night. It tends to be middle of the night that these things happen - well looking at the £500+ phone bills anyway...

I can't not let her have internet access as she needs it to download emails from work etc...
  • Shame you don't have broadband (or do you? ) If I wanted to 'turn off' the net on my PC, i just pull out the wireless USB receiver.

If you had a router, you might also be able to block access to certain websites
  • I was just thinking - can't BT block your line's access to premium numbers somehow?

can you not just have your phone on incoming calls for the meantime, as i am sure you do obtain a mobile phone?

If you have a wireless router, it's entirely possible it will allow you to block access to the internet between certain hours, for certain PCs or to certain sites - perhaps this is something you should look into...

We can block stuff direct at the router if we wanted to.

    I would:
    1. Take the sky card out whenever I left the home or went to bed. This is going to take resilience from you! So get practicing. Down side is that if you have a Sky+ then you cannot record without the card.
    2. Phone your phone provider and ask about locks on the phone. BT can offer a PIN number you need to dial before you ring out. Or you can get all premium lines blocked. Or do both for security! Or switch to incoming calls only.
    3. About PINs, check your Sky one is switched on and is different to everything else you have as are the parental controls.
    4. Sort out the security on the Router and keep all details on codes etc away from it. Ours stupidly has the WEP code on the bottom..... (not any more!)

Its not great that you have to do anything, but you do need to protect yourself. As I tell MIL on a regular basis and she still does NOTHING to prevent stupid phone/Sky bills each month - that though, is because she is lazy and simply cannot be bothered.
