i am looking for information on the safety of my storage heaters in my flat as i have been rather ill since moving in-when i first moved in i couldnt breath through the smell off the one in the bedroom-i have since been told that very old ones can give off fumes when the cast iron becomes too hot - (all above my head) - the council came and cleaned them but said they were fine-however a specialist in my health prob has said it can be caused by strong toxins being breathed in and in rare cases fatal-can someone help me before i have to put them back on for the winter.

Well mine are very old and only smell the first few times I put them on probably due to dust etc whioch has fallen inside, then they are fine and don't seem to cause us problems (have had them for 25yrs!!)
Could you put them on very low the first times and leave the windows open to see if the smell goes after a couple of days? Is there anything above them whoch could be heating up whoch shouldn't? I have towel rail above and it dries them quite quickly so a lot of heat must rise up. Or could something have fallen inside and be heating up?
Good luck with them as I find them clean easy to use and not too dear as I have good insulation.0 -
cheers for that-i know about the general info but when i first moved in and put them on the fumes where horrific-toxic even and i had to do research on the problems of breathing a a metalic taste in my mouth-thats when i came across people with real bad problems-im trying to find the link between my illness and the fumes really-so i have grounds to get them out-but thanks0
