Going to Cancel SKY today....Yikes

I can't believe I am REALLY going to do it, but I am.

My hubby is gonna go mad, but he isn't working hardly at the moment and it is just a luxury we can't afford.

I guess when things pick up we can re-instate it without any major extra charges?? I will have to find out .

We have Freeview on our telly, so its better than nothing. How many of you have taken this plunge and did you find it hard?

Freesat from SKY has more channels than Freeview and you already have the box and dish - http://www.freesatfromsky.co.uk/
A world of religious channels, shopping channels and golfing awaits....

Never had SKY - I prefer to spend several hundred pounds a year on better stuff...
  • I cancelled my Sky a while back. Couldn't really justify having it as we hardly ever watched most of the channels anyway so it seemed a waste paying for all those and never watching. I've reverted to Freeview and that's enough as we are not huge telly people anyway. We tend to watch DVD's now or find other things to do.

So I can't really say I miss it!

    Good luck.
Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free :)
    Mortgage free since 2014 :)
  • I haven't really missed it at all, haven't had it for over a year now, I tend to do other stuff like batch cooking and the house is actually tidy most of the time. There is still plenty of rubbish to watch on the freeview channels :rotfl:. If you keep your sky box and card you can still watch sky freeview anyway.
  • We got rid of sky a while back. The only change you make is from payment for rubbish tv.... to not paying for rubbish tv :D

good for you :T I have canceled sky a number of times over the year and when finances changed have rang and got it turned on again at no extra charge. I only have basic package at £18 per month as we cannot get Freesat where we live but.............................

If you keep your sky box and card you can still watch sky freeview anyway

when sky has been off you still get free to air chanels on your sky box, not as many as freesat but still more than normal tv
    TOTAL 44 weeks lose. 6st 9.5lb :T
  • i got rid of sky in 2003...still kept the box & dish and just got the free channels on it...recently got it again (bday pressie for dh) and just had to phone them, they sent me a new card and off we went....they will not supply you with any more free boxes / dishes once you have had one, so make sure you don't ebay them if you intend to get it again at some point!!!:D

did i miss it??...no, not at all..the only reason we have got it back is that dh loves his footy...we had started to use our very small amount of 'mad' money going to the pub to watch it and ended up not being able to do anything else that month as beer prices are so high (not to mention the fact that i didn't want to spend three hours at a pub surrounded by mental footy fans!!) :rotfl:
  • Hi,

We've got rid of sky and dont miss it at all, we've got freesat and you get E4 and film 4 and all the 'normal' channels so it's fine - in fact i feel better now that i don't have to trawl through a hundred channels and still not want to watch any of it!!
  • I cancelled a while back and we just kept the box, dish and same card and received all the free channels.

When I was watching one of the free sky channels on day a while back I saw an advert for LOST that day.   Now I am an avid LOST fan and we no longer had Sky One.

I rang up and asked how quick could it come back on. The very kind gentleman said it would be about 2 hours and then asked "Are you into LOST then?". :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

It came back on as promised and all was well.

A few months ago I rang up to cancel again as I wanted Sky Plus but did nto want to pay. Managed to get it and we now have Sky Plus installed for FREE. I love free things.

I cancelled our Sky package recently (it was only the 4 mix package) DD was shocked and horrified at the time but she since realised that she can still watch E4 and I have had no complaints at all - it's saving us about £20 a month (we used to get the occasional box office too) and am also saving £9 a month by cancelling the Tesco DVD rental too. It's £30 which we can now use to treat ourselves to a meal at our local Indian restaurant every month.

I'm very tempted to get rid of the TV altogether to be honest with you !
