I have only been doing the grocery challenge for a few months, but I agree with much of what has been said so far.

I work most days and find it really hard to keep up with the thread even on a daily basis, I have just been on holiday for a week and can't even face the daunting task of catching up yet.

I think it is great to have some of the helpful chat, I feel I have learnt a lot already. I would personally like to thank everyone for their ideas, hints and tips. I think people should think carefully about their posts and whether or not it is helpful to someone.

I dont quite agree with the once a day posting idea, there are a few people on here who regularly answer queries. It is better for someone to post 5 times a day if the information is useful than someone to post daily just to say hello, goodnight or I have had a NSD etc etc etc.

    4) would it be easier on the thread helpers if end of month/week totals were PM'd to them?

There is a limit of 50 PMs at any one time so having 350 people PM their budgets wouldnt work. Plus the budgets are relevant and shouldnt be excluded from the actual thread as they're the whole point of the GC in the first place ;)

I would split it into GC ... and GC Totals - that is, a thread where everyone just posts their challenge amount at the beginning of the month, and declares their total at the end. Nice and simple for people running the list, and then no one, not even people in charge of keeping the tally, need to read the main thread if they do not want to or lack the time to do so.

But its not just the people running the list that are having problems keeping up. Everyone taking part in the challenge is struggling. There is too much general chat that isnt relevant to the GC. A lot of people are leaving the challenge each month because it is too hard to follow.

Seperating the thread in any way, like by budget or by weekly/monthly or by A-Z, wont work because people will feel the need to read all the seperate threads so that they dont miss out on any tips that might be posted on one and not the others IYSWIM. It shouldnt be split.

SAV3R I agree that there shouldnt be a limit and people should first think if their post is on topic or not before posting it.

Edit: silvercharming & HariboJunkie I dont think anyone is saying that the daily thread is cliquey and unfriendly, its just that its hard for people to join in a daily thread unless theyre going to be posting every day. IYSWIM.

Just to clarify, I wasn't knocking the daily thread or its posters in my comment earlier; what I was trying to say was that sometimes it may be difficult for a newbie to join, break the ice as it were ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

having read all 3 pages of views on this thread it made me think.
I have stopped posting on GC because too many posts saying 'nsd to day etc' only or request for recipes sometimes using a new purchase cooking method etc or nothing to do with gc at all!
Like most here there is only a certain amount of time available in each day for reading/posting posts.
Also for newbies it may seem a bit clicky.

    I would suggest the following:
    • no posting allowed of 'NSD only' posts, 2/3 s of my sample reading for the last 40 mins had one or sometimes more on every page.
    • receipe requests.... move to quick questions thread, but not posted receipes...keep the link on the front page please, I do use this lots:D
    • encourge the use of THANKS BUTTON instead of 'THANK YOU, CAKE/BISCUITS/DINNER WORKED OUT OK' ETC posts.
    • polite pm to 'chatters' reminding to use the daily os thread
hope I haven't upset anyone, not my intentions just an honest answer.
  • I seem to recall there has always been chat on the GC, the format hasn't really changed from when it was originally first introduced:confused: and there was the Pin money challenge aswell (more chatting).

What I don't want to see (for people whom remember) is a repeat of what happened when the Daily thread was re-vised. _pale_

I've been taking a look back ap previous GCs. I picked May 2006 at random. 91 posts from 46 posters. The highest poster posted 13 posts, the next 5.

The current GC has 591 posts, from over 200 contributors. Already by 3rd of the month, 7 contributors have posted in double figures.

The reason that this is being discussed is that regular contributors find the GC impossible to navigate. Bearing in mind that there are plenty of other places on OS and MSE in general, for chat, they are questioning whether the GC is the best place for that chat.

Leets hope we can all be grown ups about this and no-one to take offence :A I'm certain that none is meant.

I don't think that this is a repeat of anything.

There is clearly a problem with the Grocery Challenge thread and it needs to be resolved. I have read nothing but helpful, logical and reasoned points of view on this thread which will help us to come to a decision about the best way to move forward.

  • I have joined the GC for the first time this month. I haven't been able to keep up with all the posts and have to say I have given up trying.

The only problem I had was that I asked to join in and then because there were so many posts after my request I got missed and had to send a pm to be added to the list.

Don't get me wrong, I like a nice natter but I am finding it hard to keep up!

    Hi all
I love the GC and it has made a huge difference to my pocket- many thanks to you all. My suggestions would be to have a separate grabbit thread for groceries- knowing when places have things on offer is really useful and I often make a trip in response to someone's tip and also gentle reminders that we do need to keep the thread copable with. I am finding it hard to keep up and don't want to miss posts that really help inspire me.
It is great that it is so popular feels like a real team effort to keep our shopping bills down.

    Just my thoughts

    Hi there

I have to say that I love the thread as it is, but can see why lots can't keep up... doing the list before NIKKI looked after it for me I used to read every post.. Its that busy that now i read most posts -strangely its the long ones I read..just incase there is something hidden in there :rotfl: the smaller posts i can skim as i go :D

I have to agree that catching everyones budgets for the list is a wee bit more difficult with the number of posts, but it usually the ones that aren't in bold and a different colour that i miss.....thinks thats why i might have missed you sammy ..you slipped through the net..sorry

right back off to update the list :rotfl:
