Forgive me if I waffle cuz I don't think I'm capable of thinking in a joined-up manner just yet :p I voted to have a seperate totals & chat thread because:-

I've had a peek at the Daily & the people who post on there refer to things that have happened previously, so to know what they are talking about, you need to go on a mission worthy of Tom Cruise himself :o
I KNOW that will probably happen if we have a grocery thread, but there are an awful lot of people who--by their own admission--come to OS primarily because of the GC...they didn't know we were here before, so via a GC chat thread, we can direct them towards the Quick Questions, Green Fingered, Slow Cooker, etc. etc.

Bit like the Information Desk in a shopping centre :D The totals, bargains & recipes could stay together, then hints & tips on the chat perhaps & the first post of the monthly would explain where to post.

Like I said--just thinking out loud.....

I don't post on the daily chat thread as it isn't just grocery related. There is too much chat about flylady and peoples lives for me.

I think the thing that puts people off of posting on MSE in general is that there are too many rules. Newer members feel scared to post incase it is in the wrong place.

Yep thats true ..but what about when folks declare their weekly spends -it will have to be done 4 times... not being difficult.. just thinking out loud :D

I've just compared the last two month's challenges - The list could be copied and pasted, leaving the amounts in, then only the people who want to change their amount have to post about it. Maybe?

Ok, I am fairly new but have been enjoying the challenge element of GC. Got to admit though there are some posts I do skim (and to be brutally honest sometimes when I see some certain posters ID/names I just skim even faster as I know its not that relevant). I did initially think a GC chat thread would be a good idea but then changed my mind, as the 'Daily Chat' thread is there for that surely (although I also take Chells point about that). I think we leave GC thread as it is but, also possibly introduce a GC deals thread, where we could just add the offers that are on at Tesco, Lidl, Coop, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and wherever else ? (or is this done elsewhere ?) Might it also be an idea on the first post of GC to have a link to the Daily thread, the Flylady thread, the recipe threads etc (I did see angelnikki post these links a few days back and I don't think it would be too difficult to have that at the start ?).
Ok, I have been slightly guilty of posting maybe more than I should, and even though mostly on topic, I agree that limiting it to 1 or 2 relevant posts is the way to go.

I'm a monthly spender and couldn't do it weekly - my weeks vary too much - one week I could have a spend of £150, the next £100, the next £50 and the next £150, for example - whilst I could average it out I would then be wildly over/ under often - and I wouldn't then bother with the GC, as it wouldn't *fit* with my lifestyle

I'm a weekly spender and my spends vary massively from week to week, you wouldn't have to put an average - you could just put your amount for that week then change it for next week.

I do an average then carry over any overspends/underspends.

Just another thought - weekly spends fit in OK with a monthly challenge, so monthly spends should fit in OK with a weekly challenge.

    In theory :D

Someone suggested last week a Grocery Grabbit while you can forum, this would keep relevant offers easy to find.

  • I don't know what the answer is to this but as a newbie on the GC challenge I haven't read half of it. I also think it can be a bit intimidating as a newbie with everything going in all different directions. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to post on it and what I'm not. So how about guidelines at the start of the thread?
All I can say is that I don't think the existing format is great, unless you have nothing else to do all day than keep up with it. From the bits I have read, I'm surprised most of us even have time to post on it!
Well done to OP for trying to sort it out!
  • For me a weekly challenge would not work, i like some of the others can spend £20 one week and £150 the following. I love the GC and though for months have just done a skim or only read the last 2 pages before i post, as i do not get to see it everyday and find that 30 - 50 pages could of appeared before i read again. I do find a lot of recipies on there or pages that are more like 4 posts in 1 so i tend to skip reading those. I think people should try and limit there posts to more relevent GC info and if reciepes are needed maybe post a link so it is a shorter post.

If the GC was cut up into smaller sections to be honest i doubt i would post on them. I never got on with the Flylady or daily threads i felt leftout of them but i do so love the OS board and the GC.
    Still Trying :o

But the rules are there for a reason. The board would be impossible to navigate if there were no rules. Posts are moved and merged to make it easier for new posters to find the moneysaving stuff which is what they're here for.

BigMummaF.... I don't understand what you mean about the Daily and people talking about things that have happened in the past. There are new posters joining every week and evryone was new to begin with.;)

FWIW.... I would like to post on the GC and have almost done so for the last few months but have been put off by the chat. I now just keep a note of my target and spending at home. If the GC thread was simply targets and spends I would be happy to join in.
