read the small paragraph at the top of each page,it implies using a handheld device. can you text via a bluetooth ear piece?

It shouldn't be implied, if a survey is to be successful (and accurate) the questions have to be properly researched and then worded in plain simple language with is not ambiguous or relies on implied suggestion.

My point was just that this survey was one of the worst I have seen, any results will be inherently flawed because of the ambiguity of a large number of the questions.

possibly, but i think even the blind could tell it was about handheld mobile phone use whilst driving.
i dont think anewman is going to use these as part of government stats (not that they are constructed any better) its simply part of his post grad. i dont think the relaibility of your answers really matter too much.;)

I have done the survey, but in all truth, some of the questions are really badly composed. I think I had to omit a number of them for that reason, whats with the treating people "humanely" or like "animals" when referring to other drivers or pedestrians?

And has the compiler of the survey never heard of hands free kits or bluetooth headsets? How is it possible to answer the question when the answers could be so different depending on whether the phone is hand-held or hands-free?

I did say it could be criticised ;) (and it wasn't an invitation :rotfl:)

About "humanely" or "animals" either you agree or disagree - but it is based on questions used in previous published research by someone who many would consider *the* most influential psychologist alive today. I assume the reason those words were used is they produce discriminating results, which a softer word like "dignity" might not. The same with the double negative questions at the start, based on previous published research. So what may seem like crap worded questions may have a reason.

Regards hands-free that would mean two questionnaires (assuming people exclusively use one method or the other). Research has repeatedly shown that use of a hands-free kit, the handset itself, and having a blood alcohol level of 0.08% w/v (legal limit) - all affect driving performance to a similar degree. The use of hands-free is illegal in some countries, and there has been some suggestion that it should be illegal in the UK. I agree the issue is one that needed a bit more thought - but I can only use the questionnaire I have, and note the limitations and make future recommendations based on findings.

anewman, Do they still have the Driver simulation unit at Leeds Uni? I remember being paid £40 by a reasearcher to drink vodka then climb in a real car, that was rigged up to a big cinema screen, and your responses were monitored.

Have completed the Q as well.
