Sorry if this is the wrong place!!
Basically, I would like to know the average cost of storage, I was told today by someone from the council, it's a £100 per week:eek: I might be evicted soon, house being repossessed............I don't have that much in the way of furniture, would be quiet a few boxes.......................If it's this much, this will be a big problem!! Does the cost go by how much stuff you have, or how much "space" you rent?? Sorry to be dim, never done this before!:o
Also does anyone have anyone know of any storage people in Birmingham or Leicester?

I've seen a safestore depot in Birmingham. I have no idea on prices, but it may be worth a phone call to get a rough idea?Debbie0

Thank you both!! Have just rang them for a 25 ft space, starts at £12.03 for first 8 weeks, then goes up to £19 .25 per week, with £4.20 a week insurance! Much better than a £100 a week!:D0 -
Be warned - go and look at the area first! 25ft sounds alot but they measure the space floor to ceiling. Last year i paid £120 every four weeks for 100square feet.0

Hi, I had to find storage for the same reasons as you and the council quoted us the same. I called all of the self store places and they were quoting me £100 a week for 100 sq ft. Go take a look at the size they are offering. I found a place that gives the boxes and then rents space to removal companies for storage, this company have those huge wooden boxes and each box is £12.50 a week to rent. Each 'box' is 8ft high, 5ft wide and 7ft deep and you can padlock the front if you want (depending on what you have). They will also deliver these by trailer, leave them for 2 hours and them take them back to the unit where they are stored for £50. I have full access to mine. I pay £12.50 per week (no VAT) for the storage and the goods are insured for total loss in this. Likewise, see if you can find a company that rents out shipping containers. The same company charges £35 a week for rental of a 40ft shipping container.
Alternatively, can you find a garage to rent locally as this might be cheaper.

Thanks, will do as you suggest.
This company also said something abt buying a padlock from them! Don't they provide this?0 -
HI OP.
I used Big Yellow in Brighton last year as a bridge between moving out of my old place for a month before my new one was ready.
You should provide your own padlock with these guys. Don't be tempted to simply buy one from them on the day!
Secondly, you must (I think it is mandatory) provide a detailed inventory and take out insurance. This cost me £13.21 a week for £10k insurance.
I got a room that was 110 sq feet (that's foot print, not cubic size). That's approximately the size of a garage. The cost was £172 per month.
I do know that costs vary according to location, so I'd suggest working out how much you think you might need, add at least 20% and at the very least give them a call. A visit is way better as suggested above because actually seeing the space you get will confirm if that is foot print size or cubic and you'll also quickly appreciate if your estimate is good enough!
Good luck...0 -
A couple of points to add to the above:
Cubic feet are the way you want to go - so if two places have similar prices and one has much higher ceilings than the other - go for the one with the higher ceilings as you'll be able to get more in.
I've found the price of my storage unit has increased dramatically this year - by about 25%. My theory is that people are no longer buying houses and are putting their stuff in storage, my centre is always full now, so they can charge what they want, which never used to be the case. See if you can get some sort of price guarantee for the period you expect your things to be in storage for. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing?
