Hello,
After too many problems to mention I have ditched AVG in favour of AVAST. I've never used it before and wondered if anyone had any hints or tips/tweaks. One thing that does annoy me is the a ball spinning, can it be stopped? Also does anyone know how I set a schedule scan? Thanks

Avast does not do shedueled scans
Try program settings > appearance and uncheck "animate when scanning" I know it spins when it feels like it, not just scan but that might stop it. Or simply do away with the icon all together. Or select "always hide" for the icon in Task bar properties.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

Have a look at this tutorial for Avast - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial104.html0

If the spinning ball annoys you just wait until a virus database is generated!
It honestly doesn't bother me being tucked away at the bottom of the screen and I don't find my eyes drawn to it at all.
But as already mentioned right click on the ball and untick the relevant boxes in appearance.0 -
avast is a good prog compared to avg, why do you have to look in that corner? do you constantly watch the seconds on the clock changing?0

Good move nothing but praise for Avast, AVG 8 was very demanding on system resource slowed my laptop down noticeably from previous version 7.
After a couple of days you will no longer notice the animated icons leave as is!.0 -
I use ZoneAlarm which is pretty good. I used to use Avast it's ok but use zonealarm its really good0
