Dilemma re: car insurance and student

My daughter has a car which she insures herself and I am named second driver on it. Her insurance is due for renewal but she is going to Uni in September and not taking her car. She still wants to drive it when she comes back in the holidays. For me to insure the car just for me is £171 but it would mean she couldnt drive it. For my daughter to insure it would be £506 (cheapest I've found), obviously I would have to pay as she will no longer have her part time job to pay for it. Is there any way round this? I'm loathe to pay out all the extra money when my daughter will be using the car the least.

Would some short term insurance such as http://www.insuredaily.co.uk/ be suitable if it is only for holidays?

Had a look at that site but they only insure drivers over 21, my daughter is 19, pity would have been a solution

My son is selling his car for just this reason.

Is it a luxury she could do without because financially she can't afford it.

  • Does it cost £506 with you as main driver and her as a named driver, or her as the main driver?
May be worth trying it the other way around.
Short term insurance can often cost mega money, so if it is just a luxury - she won't miss it.

Some insurance companies allow you to suspend your insuarnace for a period of at least 28days - this might be useful for you if you are happy to not use the car at all whilst at uni, and then reinstate the policy when back home from uni, I hope this is helpful

How about insuring with you as the main driver and your daughter as a named second driver? Or just insure it as third party until your daughter comes home for the holidays and wants to use it?
  • The trouble is not all insurance companies will let someone under 21 be the 2nd driver under me as main insurer. Will have a try with it though, thanks

Another option is to have the car insured in your name only. Then, when your daughter is home ring your insurance company and add her temporarily as an additional driver. There will be an admin charge for this but this is nowhere near how much you would be paying to add her as a second driver for the full year. Give your insurance company a call and chat to them - I have found them very helpful once you explain your dilemma - after all they do want your business!!

Personally, I'd be saying she'd have to do without it if she can't find a part time job and pay the insurance. There's big difference between need and want and that is a lot of money to find for a car that will be sat on your drive way most of the year!
