XL Airways update - The iceman cometh..
10-Sep-08 16:54
I’m just back from a few days in wonderful Iceland, made most wonderful by the people I met and that incredible closeness of society which you experience when v isiting friends in Iceland is today evident in the unfolding saga which is the XL Airways story. Follow closely, as discussed earlier in this Blog XL are currently looking to refinance, The airline, which is part of the third largest holiday group, is owned by the management following a buyout from Icelandic company Avion in 2006. After the buyout Avion changed its name to Eimskip, however if the XL cannot refinance, Eimskip will have to take responsibility for the loan which allowed the UK management team to purchase XL. If this happens then Eimskip have already secured the support of Björg!lfur Gudmundsson, a giant in terms of Icelandic (and world) financial resources (ie he’s mega, mega rich), plus chums who will make sure that Eimskip (and thus XL) are not swamped.. whilst nothing is guaranteed in this world I reckon this is good news for both customers and employees of this dynamic airline/holiday group. as I said "wonderful Iceland, wonderful people.."
PS check out our Iceland Express page for some great prices to Reykjavik..0 -
Sorry T Traveller, I have just started a new thread with a link to this news, I didn't mean to cross post but I hadn't seen this post. You explained it very well too, I didn't fully understand it from the link I gave in my post.
That is good news if it all goes through

We've got flights with XL.com in October to Palma, Majorca. Our departure airport has been changed from Birmingham to Manchester as the Birmingham flights have been cancelled.0

An update to this is below & it doesnt look good for ALL companies affiliated to the XL group.

Oh well, not going to Majorca now in October. But at least we are still here in the UK. I feel terrible for people stranded in Florida and elsewhere today. Lots of threads going on about this no doubt we will find out more in the next few days. Thank goodness we have not booked for Florida next year as we usually go with them.0

I feel most sorry for those who have just booked flights with XL. Glad we did not book our Florida holiday with them for next year. Those who booked just flights have the least chance of getting any money back. Anyone who booked a package should be ATOL protected. Those already on holiday are allegedly okay as they can continue their holiday and the CAA will book them a flight back for the day they are due home.0

Travel Advisors are now advising people to book with the major tour operators ie Virgin and Thomas Cook for security. Especially long haul0

XL have been struggling for a while and the rumour about the finance rug being pulled is a couple of weeks old.
As Zoom has just impacted, then rumours tend to grow.
