    She's had the computer from new and hardly ever uses it. It's not as if it's run into the ground. I'll try espresso's kind advice.

    I found once that Norton AV was a problem within itself. I know someone who has it on their machine and it was taking up to half-an-hour to shut down and quite a while to start up. In my opinion, avoid Norton and go for a free, less feature packed version such as Grisoft's free AVG.

    I think HP shipped machines with Norton or maybe some other AV software at some stage. It is recommended you only run 1 AV Software because as Mr. Skint said, they conflict sometimes and mess up.
