I went on the comparison sites today and switched from my current tarrif (Scottish Hydro Best Plan economy 10). I switched to Click Energy 5 as it came out way cheaper on all the sites.
What I am not sure is though how Scottish Gas provide their economy settings. ScottishHydro give 3 periods of off peak tarriff (2 of which are during the day).
Scottish gas won't change these settings, but there is a potential problem.
Do you have more than 2 readings (e.g. day, night, afternoon). If so, SG will not be able to bill you on click5 but will offer a best fit tariff. If you only have 2 readings (e.g. Normal/low) then they will bill you as an economy 7 customer but won't change your meter, this is probably what the comparison site is suggesting. You would get the same 10 hours as you do now. (Sshh!)

So could I be cheaper staying put based on the way Scottish gas split their off peak times? Or will i still be cheaper.
I find trying to work out the whole thing of whether you are "really" cheaper or not very confusing.
Our heating system is a brand new "wet" electric boiler system. I am led to believe they are very efficient. On Hydro we were paying £31.00 per month which easily covered heating and electric for 4 bedroom house (we only have electric).
I still firmly believe that there is collusion among all the suppliers and also the switch sites, and it is kept deliberately confusing for all.
Any advice and help is appreciated.

Any company that cannot bill a 3 rate meter will not be worth moving to ( and that includes Scottish Gas). Most suppliers can only bill as a 2 rate so you would lose your cheap boost in the daytime. This would also involve changing your meter to an Economy 7 one.Unfortunately you are stuck with the very few suppliers who can bill you correctly.

Just been onto Quidco site they state **Cashback is only available to customers who are NEW to British Gas.**
**Existing British Gas customers cannot receive cashback.**
Therefore looks unlikely that existing customers switching to Click 5 from previous Click will get anything! Anybody tried it?

This has always been the case IIRC. But by NEW customer they mean switching from another supplier not that you have ever been a BG customer in the past. I'll let you into a secret - BG paid me 2 lots of cashback in one year simply by me switching away from them (to earn cashback with another supplier) then switching back to BG a few months later. Gave me a nice fuzzy feeling as well.

HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??
  • I changed from click 2 to click 5 and went through quidco, tracked as £0.00 :(

I didn't get it when moving into our new home a few months back and switching from BG Standard to click 5. Quidco did not state it at the time though.
