TomsMom, if you do go to Richer Sounds, have a look at Onkyo. A friend needed a small but decent quality system, I've not heard it but he's pleased with it.
    Move along, nothing to see.

In the 1950s / 1960s if you bought a piece of premium hifi kit you could be certain your investment would not be obsoleted or undercut within the next year. Not so nowadays. Today, good amps and speakers will be reasonably future-proof, anything digital consider disposable.

Thanks for that Spud but my nearest Richer Sounds is 2.5 hours drive away. We live in a rural area so my nearest town of a decent size is 1.5 hours drive away, so I'll need to do some research to see what specialist shops are in the towns I can get to and what brands they stock.

I'd be quite happy to buy on recommendation where there's been good feedback from members here and sites like What Hi Fi and for peace of mind John Lewis springs to mind as we purchased a DVD recorder from them and they seem to have a good reputation for customer service. Unfortunately the Denon is out of stock there at the moment, I'll see what other makes they have.
  • Hi Folks

I've removed some posts on here because we have to be very careful with our terminology to keep the site protected.

Calling a company scammers or implying they take money by deception because of their price point is very risky and potentially damaging to the site. I completely understand what you want to say, but we have to be a little more constructive how we say it.

A company can put any price point on a product they like; it is the consumers choice whether they pay it. If all consumers refused to pay it, they would go out of business - simple as that. However, that price point doesn't mean they are doing anything illegal and here we need to be very careful.

We are more than happy for you all to have a view, but i hope you can understand how careful we need to be.

    Good grief.

If Denon sued everyone who said selling $500 digital cables was a scam, they wouldn't need to bother making hi-fis.

I agree with those recommending going for separates. You'll get far more bang for your buck.
I also agree with those recommending Richer sounds. I've always found them to be knowledgeable and honest.
They won't try to sell you the most expensive thing. And you can listen to it set up with no obligation to buy.

However as you have ruled that out due to your location I would have to say go with Denon of those you have picked.

I'm going to reiterate that if the budget is £200 - £250 then seperates is probably not the way to go. If the budget was £350 plus then the situation would definitely be different.

A small word of warning on Richer Sounds: If you know what you want and they have it in stock, then great. If they don't (and their stock levels are notoriously erratic) then they do have a habit of trying to flog you whatever they've got the biggest stockpile of that loosely fits your requirements.

It's also worth bearing on mind that Cambridge Audio, one of their favourite brands, are also owned by Julian Richer, and Richer Sounds do tend to point you in their direction if you're not sure what you need. I'm not saying that Cambridge Audio stuff is bad, but it's probably not the best either, and the advice you get at Richer Sounds may not be entirely unbiased!

I have found a couple of hi-fi specialiast shops - two different towns, each 1.5 hours away in opposite directions  . Both also have listening rooms so we will choose one of them and make the journey, probably at the end of the week. As I say, we're not purists and want it to look and sound good in our lounge which is not overly large (17.5' x 11.5') so we'll see what's on offer. Probably will want to spend £200-£250 then maybe add speakers on top.

    Thanks everyone for your input.

I'm not worried what Denon may or may not do to everyone, i'm worried about MoneySavingExpert.com. If you have an issue with our policy here, i suggest you contact us on [Removed by Forum Team] and address it with us.

    Try this:

    http://www.richersounds.com/productlist.php?cda=productlist&sgroup=MINISYSTEMS

You may need to order speakers separately. Cable wise, there's no need to spend silly money with these systems, it really wouldn't make that much difference on a system of that budget.
