Leave it be for now, I'd say - it'll be easier (and you won't lose the heat by opening the SC!!!) when it's finished off and cooled.
Actually, if you're not going to eat it today, something I often do (works for more than just soups - good for stews, casseroles, stock etc....) is let it cool down on the kitchen counter, then pop it in the fridge overnight. Next morning you'll be able to skim off the now-solid layer of fat in pieces, which is a lot easier
As for flavour, wait until the end - the flavour'll be a lot more developed then, and you'll be able to taste it properly. Bet you it'll taste a lot better come four or five o'clock!
Oooh, and have you ever tried putting some fine-chopped celery in with the other veg when you start off a pea soup? Brings out more of the ham-flavour (and don't worry if you don't like the flavour - you can't taste the celery) and adds more goodness to the pot!
Good luck with the soup - I bet that'll go down a treat on a day like today!Oh come on, don't be silly.
It's the internet - it's not real!0 -
skim some of the fat off, but leave some for taste. If the soup still tastes bland after 8 hours add a chicken cube or two. Frying the bacon before it went into the SC would have gave it a better taste.0

When I cook lentil soup I fry the onions along with some curry paste. It gives such a lovely flavour to the finished soup. I put in a couple of tablespoons of korma curry paste.

Could you use it as a base for a casserole or curry?
Add something strong tasting - like a bit of roasted garlic, some glugs of worcester sauce, or tabasco sauce?
I often eat soup with lots of cheese-on-toast - mature cheddar - so that's quite strong tasting and if my soup is bland, it seems to offset the strong tasting cheese.
I'll try and think of some more!0 -

Are you veggie? If not then a ham/pork stock cube will liven your soup up. If you are or if you don't fancy a meaty stock cube in your soup you could try a small amount of cyrry powder or paprika, give it a bit of a spicy taste, also add a twist of black pepper and a small pinch of salt.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. Hi skintmum,
There's recent thread with lots of suggestions on how to make soup taste more flavoursome so I've added your thread to it to keep the ideas together.

Have you got any tinned toms or passata? Maybe add that and see if it helps?"Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0

(your friend might not find it bland!)
I've not done soups but I have done casseroles in my slow cooker & they tend to be a tad bland I must confess. I normally add a couple more stock cubes or bisto gravy granuals. How about a little spice? Perhaps a little bit of mild chilly powder or paprika? Only if you like a little spice though. I find it really difficult to get a nice flavour balance on things like this but a couple extra stock cubes sometimes helps.0
