Baby gate

Options
Does anyone have any recommendations? We had a couple before, didn't seem to get on with them that well though, but perhaps it was the wrong kind of stairs.

Also do you think should get one or two - i.e. just for the top of the stairs, or at the bottom as well?

I think we had the standard metal Linden gate. They never seemed to fit that well.

I think thats what i am using right now.

    I have a 2nd hand one, don't panic it's not for a child, i have a puppy to restrict.

It's been 14 years since i needed to use one.

It's a balance of getting it fitted in the doorway and making sure the screws are nice an secure.

Saying that my ex sawed big chunks out of the door frames so that doors could be shut and use the gate!!

The only advice i can give is yes if it concerns a lil one have one at the top and bottom of the stairs.....

I've got a "travel safety gate" a bit like this one:

    http://www.worldwideshoppingmall.co.uk/toys/gate-to-go-pressure-travel-gate.asp

Not sure if that's the exact one, but it's adjustable, can fold up small, and can easily be moved from place to place. We tend to just put it at the top of the stairs - for use to keep the boy up there at night. I trust him to climb up and down on his own during the day, but if we didn't then we could easily just put it at the bottom of the stairs during the day.

I have one top and bottom as my wee one shoots up the stairs quicker than you can say NO! One at the top was a necessity as DS1 once fell down our stairs so wasnt taking any chances with DS2.

We have the Linden ones, not the best but do the job. My friend has a fab one, its like a roller blind, very secure and you can un roll it when the kids are in bed so saves you stepping over a floor bar, which is one feature i dont like on the Linden ones. The roller one is around £60 tho!

A well fitted safety gate is worth it's weight in gold, imho. We had a metal type that came from Mothercare for the door of DD's bedroom, and another second hand one for the bottom of the stair, both of them had swing open gates in them rather than being the fixed type that you had to climb over, my sis had them and they were a real nuisance.

The reason for not having a stairgate at the top step of the stairs is , if, for some reason the child gets past the bottom gate and up the stairs, they then have nowhere to crawl onto when they reach the top, and unfortunately they can topple back down the stairs.

Which is why our DD's bedroom had the gate on it.;)

    ours were like this...

We've got a gate top and bottom because our stairs are actually the steepest stairs ever (fact ;)). Can't remember where we got them from because we've had them up for about five years now, but we've got the ones without the bar at the bottom because I was keen not to trip up at the top. The advantage we find of not having the gate on the bedroom door is that DS and DD can travel between their bedrooms for a play in the morning, thus leaving me and DH have a bit of a lie in. :D

We're quite vigilant with the stairs and making sure the gates are closed because it's so steep.

And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

i prefer the wall mounted ones that are screwed into the wall rather than the ones that are pressure mounted as they dont have footbars to stub your toes on, did this once and almost went flying down the stairs with ds in my arms.
