npower price rises

For the second time, I've followed Martin on the when to switch and when not to switch supplier.

Only the other day I went to the energyhelpline site and applied to join npower, currently being with Powergen.

Once again, a few days later, the company I move to announces a price increase, leaving me unsure who is cheapest again!

Whilst I will exercise my rights under the 7 day cooling off period, I think today has proven that there is no right time to switch.

Martin obviously has the best intentions but even he can't guess what the market will do.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has just had the misfortune to look in the direction of npower days before they up their prices.

EDIT - Gas will rise by 13% on current prices, and electricity by 12%, beginning in January 2006.

I'm the same - signed up for N Power as suggested by https://www.firsthelpline.com on 31st October and now they have put the prices up by about 14%.

I don't blame Martin but I wish I had been able to see an understandable list that showed just who had put their prices up in the past 6 months or so. Then I could have seen that N Power were due a big rise.

Oh Well - at least it will be cheaper than BG and Scottish Power ( I hope )

  • npower came up as the cheapest option for me too, only I didnt switch as we knew thier prices were going up in January, so I didnt feel it was an overall reflection of what I would be paying. I stayed with utility warehouse, and will wait and see how things go.

Oh dear, oh dear. We have recently moved to npower and this is not good news. The main problem I can see with npower is that they give a £50 DD discount (to dual fuel customers) but you only get that by staying with them for a year - so either I bin them in January, and lose the £50 discount, making them uncompetitive, or I hang in there till around next September and pay over the odds for 8 months in order to earn the £50.

D'oh! Remind me never, ever to choose any company which gives its discounts retrospectively again.

Good page here for listing price updates.

Interesting reading. Npower would seem to make a full set this time around. Next rises Jan or Feb next year then :wall:

  • I too have been caught out  Certainly not Martin's fault though - I would have made a £90 saving - he wasn't to know.

Currently with Scottish Power, made the switch to to Npower about 10 days ago, so could still cancel on Monday as I'm within the 14-day cooling off period.

Should I cancel - or just let the switch happen with the intention of switching again before Dec 31st? What do you think?

Personally, I would cancel, as you'll be paying their prices for a short time as the change takes 5 to 6 weeks to go through.

The number I had for them is 0845 601 1102, although looking on saynoto0870.com there appears to be numerous 0800 numbers, too many for me to list here.
  • I was cought too! May the number of customers switching made them rise the prices? For me it is not late to cancel and stay with BG online.

I have recently contacted NPower and the transfer was/is going through. After reading they are planning to raise prices I would be no better off. Because I was only 1 day over the cancellation period that said they transfer would have to go through.
Well I have contacted my present supplier and they have agreed to suspend the transfer. If there are further problems and it goes through I will just transfer straight back again. What a bloody con.

PS. Think Martyn was bit hastie on advising it was the time to switch.
  • ....NPower came up as my best option, potentially saving me almost £400 a year! This was reduced to less than £150 once I asked them to do the recalculations using their January prices.

Fortunately for me I only took action to switch a week ago and so I'm well within the 'cooling off' period and hence have cancelled my contract. Having read a few of the posts here it seems that I'm one of the lucky ones.

Ah well, I'm off to do the comparison again since I'm obviously paying way over the odds for my gas & electricity!
