Small charities?

Hi
I'm just in the process of cancelling my DD to the NSPCC as I'm fed up of the amount of correspondence , and the latest is asking me to change my will. This type of pressure is something I personally dislike and am looking for a smaller charity, where my money isn't spent on such letters, preferably helping children.

does anyone have an idea?
Thanks

  • What about a local hospital?

Or a local organisation like a junior football club, most are run by volunteers.

Have a look at the link:

It all depends on what kind of help you are interested in giving to children. Disabled, learning difficulties, medical conditions, abused, single parents, children in deprived areas? Help with sport, arts, education, counselling?
I would always favour supporting a local charity where I could understand in detail the work which is being done and the environment in which it operates.

    Hi
Thanks for the link, that's given me plenty to look at!

I would like to know that my money isn't paying for mass and costly correspondence of the nature I mentioned, but am quite flexible within that.

I'm thinking of the sponsor a child in Africa if anyone has experience of that? Am still open to offers though.

    Cheers

Mustard Seed Relief Missions sends humanitarian aid out to families in Eastern Europe, and at Christmas sends Love in a Box gifts to the children.

Their details can be found here (hope that worked!!)

Or the Quicken Trust support children in Uganda, many are the victims of AIDS. Their details are here

    Hi!
I totally agree with you about NSPCC - I cancelled mine because they kept phoning me, and also took out the DD before the due date several times, costing me a ton of money. Which is not something I can afford, as I work for a charity as well, so I'm far from loaded :-)

So let me just quickly put in a cheeky plug for my charity... It's called Walsall Youth Arts, and we run arts and media projects for young people in Walsall & nearby, to give them new practical and personal skills, give them opportunities they wouldn't otherwise have, and help them into employment or further training. Our website is walsallyoutharts.org.uk if you're interested!

But on a more general note, have you tried asking your local authority? They should have a register of all the small charities in your area, any of which would be hugely grateful for any help you can offer, as funding is pretty hard to get hold of. Most small local charities will use your donations directly to fund their charitable activities, as they don't have a big staff to maintain or national headquarters or TV advertising, etc., like big charities do. So you'll have the reassurance that your money is paying to help someone, rather than being spent on posting pens to half a million uninterested people!

Also, have you looked at thebiggive.org.uk? It lists loads of charities in the UK and worldwide, which mostly don't have the publicity opportunities & budget of big charities like NSPCC. You can search by location or type of beneficiary, and get in touch via the website.

Hope you find yourself a worthwhile cause who will be suitably grateful for your support!:A
