Help! What should I do about slow payment?

  • I think you are being a little unreasonable here. Ebay give 7 days to pay, your buyer paid within 2, which is pretty good going. I currently have a buyer whose payment has gone through as an echeque, i certainly dont hold it agianst him personally! Its part & parcel of Paypal, we have to suck it up if we want to use it & ebay.

Paypal will tell you when the echeque is expected to clear, its normally next to the amount.

Personally I would not contact the buyer again until you are ready to post. He/she may consider your emails pushy & leave negative feedback accordingly. I cannot see that the buyer has done anything wrong.

i paid by echeque once - by mistake. i think i hadn't updated a new credit card or something. my bet is that the buyer is as frustrated by the delay as you are..... i would however, already be tempted to give a neutral to you if i was harassed about payment when there was nothing i could do about it. i'd back off, because at the moment, i think you're being a bit unreasonable tbh.

I suppose I can't understand why someone would wait 2 days before paying. Whenever I bid for something Im sitting at the computer and then, if I win, I put through a payment straight away or send an email to state I will pay by cheque/postal order. Either way, the seller knows exactly what Im doing at the time of winning the item. I can't imagine winning something and thinking "great Ive won!" and then turning off my computer and leaving it for 2 days before I pay! Must be just me.

When this buyer put his Paypal payment through and it was made clear that Paypal were delaying it I suggested that he send a cheque/postal order and cancel the Paypal payment instead and he refused. He won the item on Sunday 17th Aug and its now 29th and the payment is still uncleared in Paypal. It may not be his fault (or it may be if he has an out of date cr card on Paypal) but I did give him an alternative way to pay to cut Paypal out of the loop. If he had sent me a cheque it would have cleared by now and postal orders are like getting cash. I would personally hate to leave a seller waiting for my money.

He might not have a cheque book ~ I don't know many people who do have one these days!

He might not live near a Post Office, or maybe he works all week so can't get to a Post Office to get a postal order.

He paid within 2 days of the auction ending. Nothing wrong with that at all.

I know you must be annoyed at how long it is taking, but it doesn't have anything to do with the buyer at all.

if a seller told me to cancel a paypal pending payment and to pay by other means that would give me no protection, i'd give some very clear feedback to indicate this to other buyers! i also don't think waiting a whole 2 days for payment is anything to get worked up about......

i would personally hate to deal with a seller who views transactions like this..... be careful as you are doing everything possible to encourage a bit fat (justified) neg!

I agree, if a buyer came on here asking what they should do as seller wants them to cancel the echeque and send a cheque we would be warning them against a possible scam. Why do you expect your buyer to give up any buyer protection?

None of us like echeques and many of us wish they would go away, but they don't so we just have to do our best. It isn't the fault of your buyer.

If quick sales are that important to you then possibly ebay is not the right place to sell. People often put in bids and then go away or to work for a few days, or maybe they snipe, there is nothing dodgy at all about a person who waits 2 days to pay and I am quite surprised to find someone who thinks there is.

Might have been away for a couple of days, could have been ill, there are all sorts of reasons. Must admit I pay up as soon as possible, but sometimes this has meant a couple of days delay. But as you have 7 days to pay...

But its been 10 working days, not including weekends. I suppose because Im so organised and do everything immediately I expect everyone to be the same. By the way, if I was able to give him a Neg for this I wouldn't. I know he's not doing this on purpose its just frustrating.

Its like the difference between me and my daughter. She packs for a holiday abroad on Saturday evening when she is leaving the house in the early hours of Sunday morning! I pack at least three weeks before I go!!!
