I need to drive my mother's car to get it fixed at the garage, thing is it's an automatic and I've never driven one before. On top, I'm not insured and I'm just bit scared that the one time i take it out, something may happen. I need to get it out to the garage to get it fixed as she is unable to do so. This maybe a silly question, but can i get like a couple of days insurance for when i'm going to drive it?

the simplest way is to explain this to garage people, they will probably be more than happy to come and collect it.
its really not worth risking taking it on the road uninsured. from your post it seems that you were maybe thinking about it. nothing would particularly have to happen, you would maybe be nervous, make a small mistake, someone watching
stop you, points on your licence, fine etc. like i say simple answer at the beginning of post. good luck and i hope the car doesnt cost too much. x
anniemake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Your mother can phone her insurers and have you put onto her insurance as a named driver for a few days. I used to do that when my son came to visit and wanted to drive my car.
You might want to practice driving it on a quiet road to get a feel for it, automatics are great to drive but it can take a bit of getting used to if you are used to a manual car.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
Call your insurance and ask to add the car for a few days.
Use DayInsure
Or Ecar Payasyougo.
Or be a **** and drive uninsured.0 -
or get your mum to drive it to the garage0

We borrowed my dads big beast of a car when they went to America and it cost £78.00 to be put on the insurance for 18days, but he does have a big monster car that has 8 seats and is a bit like a jeep but massively bigger, so i can't see it costing that much for a day or two.0

Of course not, this is the internet after all :-), but since the op isn't able get it to the garage either atm it could, depending on why she can't, be easier/cheaper for his/her Mum to do it.0

Most of the charge will have been swallowed up by admin charges unfortunately. I imagine it will be £15-£30 before you even start.0 -
Do not drive the car without insurance, get stopped by the police or god forbid have an accident, and you will be thrown into a whole heap of trouble.
If you have your own insurance that is fully comp then you probably have 3rd party cover for any car, check with your insurer, if you do have 3rd party you and your mum have to weigh up the chances of and the cost of any accident that you may have.
Otherwise get added to your mums insurance, or go for 1 day insurance, with Norwich union its £10.50 a day you can by it on the day so don't buy it for getting the car home untill you know it is fixed.
Finally you say "thing is it's an automatic and I've never driven one before" you must have if you have a full licence to pass your test, otherwise you have an automatic licence only which means you can't drive your mums car and any insurance you did have would be invalid!!0 -

I don't understand this comment.....
As I understand it, OP has a full licence and drives a manual car, but his mum's car is an automatic and he has never driven one before. Or have I got that wrong?I'm a retired employment solicitor.
