Please Help! Double Glazing is horrible!

Options
Hi everyone,

Please please can any of you help. We have started to have new double glazing fitted today and its awful. Really thick cheap frames.

Its a local firm and we have no contract. We asked for the same windows as next door and they are nothing like next doors.

I know its partly my fault as I never thought to ask for a sample. I didnt realise that there was that kind of variety in frames. Ive checked down the street and no one elses are that thick.

What can I do? I am going to ring them first thing tomorrow and tell them not to do anymore until we have sorted something out.

I would really appreciate any help on the matter!
Thanks in advance
Lisa

Simply tell them they aren't what you specified. As long as you haven't paid them any money, things should run smooth. You're quite within your rights to ask for the proper windows.

No we haven't paid any money, not even a deposit thank goodness. I'm dreading speaking to them tomorrow.

Its our first home and we are renovating it. I just feel sick cos its the first thing we have had done and its gone badly! :(

    Thanks for your advice!

Don't let them think you're an easy pushover Lisa. Tell them nicely but firmly that you want what you specified. It seems they are trying their hand, by getting rid of some stock which no-one wants.

Whats worse is we have had the original stained glass copied so that it matches with next door so all that would need re-doing.

I definately wont be a push over! Are the windows and doors made to measure or are they generally a standard size?

    Thanks again

  • all windows should be made to measure .have you got bay or bow windows and where the frames join this is where the frames look bulky

    Hi,

The windows are bay windows with 5 panels. The neighbours windows look really nice but ours stand out like a sore thumb. The glass looks so much smaller and the opening top windows look tiny because of the thickness of the surround! Its the whole surround that looks too thick not just where they join.

We have had the front door fitted too and this is ok but not exactly what we asked for. They are due to fit the downstairs bay, back door and french doors at the back but I don't want them too as they all look cheap!
  • your neighbours bays may have been made from narrow outer section which we would use on bow windows to avoid bulky looking frames .although if the bays are load bearing they need bay poles which increases the frame size were they join

    Hi,

I have just rung the window man and he explained that the windows are load bearing and have reinforced poles in the frames making them bulky. It makes me wonder how the neighbour has managed smaller frames because there's would need to be load bearing too!

Is there nothing we can do then? I've asked if he will ring the company he orders the frames from to see if we have any options!

    Kind regards

Your neighbours frames may be aluminium, they are generally slimmer but cost alot more.

Could you let me know of this DG company that installs windows without a contract, and without a deposit?
