  • DAB is awful to hifi listeners good old analogue and a set of ears is best. Even the BBC technicians say its rubbish. Don't go there. More choice, text, info, cr*p sound just like podcasts. Less is More

Thanks for the answers. It's a Pure move. When I say awful I mean terrible compared to my CDs and worse than FM. Other stations are worse than Radio 3. 128kbs played through a decnt hi-fi is no fun.

I got a DAB radio, connected it's line-out to my hi-fi and the sound quality is abysmal. Same with earphones. Reception was fine.
I won't be using it as I listen to Radio 3 a lot.

All you need now is a widescreen TV and you will have a full set of modern products which are worse than what they were designed to replace.

I would say that LCD TVs have been a big step backwards, rather than widescreen per se. The quality is improving all the time but I have seen so many LCD TVs which are frankly crap, particularly with a standard definition satellite or DVB signal.

I have a seven-year old Toshiba widescreen CRT and the quality is still excellent, despite the scratch caused by one of my foul children attacking the screen with a tractor. I'm in no hurry to upgrade to the whole HD/LCD TV circus.

Arf! It's bizarre isn't it that improvements in technology often reduce the quality of what we are watching and listening to. CD came along and that was great for a while until crappy mastering and excessive compression ruined the quality of what we were listening to. Then along comes MP3 and completely screws any chance of decent musical quality. Real improvements like DVD-A and SACD are sidelined to audiophile niches due to lack of reasonably-priced equipment and a dearth of media. We are now in the situation where if you want a decent audio experience you have to go and buy vinyl !!!!!!

Right, I'm off to listen to my cat's whisker.

I've always been saying this, and got slated for it. I watched the Olympics in HD in a shop the other day, and quite frankly my 3 year old widescreen SD CRT gave a better picture.

A perfectly setup analogue signal will always beat digital, as long as money means companies are cramming more services in than they should. Anyone remember BSB Satellite with its DMAC service - that was a perfect picture, far better that some of the digital channels now because of compression.

I use a cheap DAB radio, and i use the Aux input to my Hi Fi-the sound on the Better channels is much better, and no "Burbling"(Radio 2 is notorious for this on FM) and the reception even using its built in "Rod" aerial is better (Yes i do have a proper outside FM aerial)
As to the old chestnut that CRT is better, it aint, even on SD the picture on a GOOD QUALITY set is far superior, as well as the obvious that u couldnt get a CRT bigger than 36", (and u couldnt lift it either)

I would say that watching Freeview on a decent CRT set is better than watching it on a LCD due to the compressed signal. The CRT smooths out the picture to some extent whereas the LCD produces pixelated blocks and it looks worse IMHO.

I have seen a good quality HD source being shown on a decent LCD TV and it was really good, but Freeview isn't a great signal source. It's based on an old compression algorithm as already mentioned here.
