And you won't get fined £1000...that is just nonsense. While I was wrong (i.e. this is a criminal offence), whether you have a criminal record - don't want to get advice on this but I doubt you will be on the Criminal Records Bureau for this but then I am not 100% sure so don't take my word on it.
Read this from the Citizen Advice Bureau.

Call CAB and get your options. You don't have to pay a lawyer etc etc. Don't fear.0 -

hi, can i ask a question, i have always had a tv licence, untill 3 months ago ,when i realised i just dont watch it, so i wrote a nice polite letter and disconnected my areil, however they have told me i need to let an inspector in, this i wasnt worried about untill i read this thread, is he likely to be like a salesman and not leave when asked? i have two large dogs that could i suppose perswade him to leave but i'd prefer it if he didnt come in if he's going to be high pressure.1. i'm bi polar.:rotfl:2. carer for two autistic sons.:A 3. have a wonderful but challenging teenage daughter. 4. have a husband that is insatiable. 5. trying to do an open degree.0

An inspector just turning up on your doorstep would not have a right to enter your property: you do not have to let him/her in to your home.0

May one ask what you put in your nice polite letter ? Did you admit to having a TV ?
Like Little Voice says these people have no power of entry without a warrant, well not yet anyway but given the way we are going that wont be long (little rant now over )"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

you have no obligation to let them in.
you have no obligation to respond to them.
they will definitely be a salesperson because they are paid like a salesperson (i.e. gets a commission for every "conviction").0 -

This is correct they are not allowed in your home without your invite, infact he broke his side by coming in.
They have no rights to enter a property, they have no rights to demand to see the TV/receiving equipment.
But on the other side, whilst you have a tv you need the stupid licence, because as far as they are concerned you have the facility to watch tv.
There have been a few test cases that have lost because they claimed they didn't watch tv just dvd/video's then it breaks down to recorded from the tv then you will need a licence its carp and its the big brother bullies.
Just a question how many tv's in total are there in the house (question for OP) as you are allowed up to 5 before needing more licenecesLife is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -
So let get this right-if i use a TV thats not visible from outside, when i hear a knock on the door, i just switch the TV off, and (A) i dont need to let anyone in, or (B) if they do get in i just say "I dont watch it" (or (C) they go away to get a warrant in which case i just remove the TV... and i dont need to buy a licence? Surely not.0

this isnt correct, if it is a private household then one licence will cover as many tv's as you wish for use by you and your family living at that address.
what the OP is saying is because it is a single tenancy agreement then a licence is required for using a tv in own room, even if the property has a licence for covering communal areas.***** on the road to debt freedom *****

That is correct, except that if they enter and see a TV with an aerial connected there will be a presumption that you do indeed use it to watch broadcasts. Not to mention the possibility that they could use information from their detector vans.0
