Can you define what you mean by a "shared house" IE Is it a joint tenancy agreement or a separate tenancy agreement ?

It sounds like you just have a separate tenancy but I would check on it as if it is a shared tenancy you only need the one license to cover the whole house and all receivers therein

  • And another thing, I'm sure this is a civil case so i can't get an criminal record, or any credit rating problems right?

    What the heck????? criminal record????

Yes you can get a criminal license for not owning a TV license if you have used the TV.
What kind of advice is this??? Perjury charge?? He isn't even lying. Come on.

Re read the thread, he admitted using the TV, albeit for a short period, so to now claim that he made no such statement would be a lie. BTW..this is also being stated on an open forum, what more proof of a statement is needed

No, the first thing I did was check with my landlord about the licence he has (which I pay a share towards in my monthly rent), it is a multi occupancy house so it only covers the communal areas, i.e the lounge next to my room

No it is a criminal offence and will be marked as such if found against you. That in turn would mean a lot of problems later on.

My son had the same thing actually , he had a shared house with a TV license which apparently covered the small portable in the kitchen. One of the other students had a visit from the TV license people and was informed that as the bedrooms had locks and they paid individual rent they were treated as a separate occupancy within the house. My son , plus the others in the house were then served notices saying that records would be checked and that they would be asked to produce a valid TV license at the next visit, so we bought one and luckily that was the end of it. He also got very little reception and used it mainly for watching DVDs..if it was switched on at all..but watch it just once and you are liable to have a license.

    1. I would love to know if there is any cases shown that shows a person receiving a criminal record for not having a TV license especially on the facts the OP has stated.

    2. He is not lying. He never said he will lie. He is stating the facts - i.e. that he used it for a week. Come on.

So how long then do *you* think you are allowed to watch a TV without having a valid license, is there a cut off point? Is 7 days OK, what about 8, how about if you only ever watch one programme a month for a year..?

There is no leeway, check the regulations.

No leeway? The judge has discretion to provide different types of penalties based on the circumstances. Based on the circumstances, he will just get fined. Criminal record? I would like to see a case on that.

I fear your options are very limited then, pleading guilty will probably be the cheapest.

Expect a fine of around £200 maybe less if you plead your a poor student plus court costs £50/£70

It is also a criminal offence unfortunately
