another option is getting the nokia 3220 from orange website. this can be unlocked for free and can take a 3g sim card (afaik).
advantage is that it is a much smaller handset.

True, but, once three find out that you're using your SIM in a 2G handset, they'll block your SIM card, I know, because they sent me a text threatening to do this, unless I put my SIM back into a 3G enabled phone. After I put it back into my 3G enabled phone, they still tried to block my SIM!!! Luckily it didn't work though. I had to switch my phone off and on for it to work again, as it was asking for PIN, which '3 couldn't provide.

i dont really see how they can do that.
there cant be a condition in the contract that you have to use the handset they provide.
anyway if they block the sim you can stop paying the contract and get a new phone altogether.

They can do this because there is something in the terms and conditions which states that you must use your SIM card in a 3G enabled handset. If you put your SIM card in the Nokia 3220, it would always be roaming on the O2 network, which costs '3' more when you make calls this way.

They'll block the SIM, but this does not absolve you from paying your bills, as you're in a 12 month contract. HTH. :)
