Sod IT, I'm going to become a nanny!

I know a nanny (an extremely good one) on £40k with a car and a 2 bed central London flat that would cost about £450/week to rent thrown in. That's pretty normal for a Norland Nanny I think.

So most people may only go out half as much - the next thing you know, your local restaurant/gastropub can't afford to stay open.

Funny you should mention that. I just noticed a sign in the (closed) window of a local chain bar/restaurant in my office. I then googled this article from a few weeks ago.

NDG..You'll see my post refers to meester not yourself ;)

Meester was upto something 'dodgy' with TC and benefit awards as detailed in his earlier threads.

Sorry - should learn to read!

    It's a well-paid job - £25k is typical for a live-out nanny in London.

And we wonder why house prices are so high!
Not to knock nanny's but this was not the kind of job it was 20 years ago (obviously)

Expensive in general terms, though. Our nanny is great, Isaac loves her, she loves Isaac, and she's really good for him. We couldn't pay her £40k a year, though, and she has her own house anyway.

She is expensive because she is very good and also because as a Norland Nanny she is a status symbol for the parents.

Most nannies don't earn that sort of cash but the industry changed after Louise Woodward in the States. People now want trained nannies with police checks etc and if you've got barriers to entry in any industry, employment becomes more expensive.

I earned great money (unqualified) nannying in education breaks before I took another, fulltime position. It was as seasonal as my uni holiday (full time parents whose school did the 8-6:30 shift usually), the kids were often on activities anyway, and I learned to deal with some of the most difficult people I've ever met (I reckon I can get any kid to eat vegetables now). I got my entry into museums and galleries paid, in the name of cultural education and, ultimately, it was rewading, even when the kids really hated me (the cabbage incident springs to mind) I knew I was responsible for a tiny part of the attitudes and strengths that would influence these young people's lives, hopefully for the better. While I think its superb kids have more protection now, I think its a los to girls like me who learned a lot from this kiddy interaction, and indeed with the kids, who in turn, shaped the parent I hope to be.

Even childminders around here seem to be advertising at around £4.50 per hour per child... That's a pretty good income if you look after 5 kids!
