My SIL had a cat who had an injury to it's leg. Several months later the cat got ran over and needed treatment, the insurers refused to pay for the treatment as the leg was included - different injury obviously, but still they refused to pay. SIL ended up having to put the cat down because she couldn't pay the vets bill.

    That was with petplan.

I know many people (and me personally) who don't have insurance but have a "pet saving account" for any such emergencies, because of these kinds of things with insurance companies happening.
If my typing is pants or I seem partcuarly blunt, please excuse me, it physically hurts to type. :wall: If I seem a bit random and don't make a lot of sense, it may have something to do with the voice recognition software that I'm using!

Just be warned there are loads of insurance on the pet insurance market. the one petplan offeres covers any conditions that are on going- my dog has diabetes & they have cover it no problems for the last 4 years & will continue to do so until my alfie passes on.

Tesco (and other supermarkets) are mostly the type to cover conditons up to a certain amount or they have a time limit on how long we can claim on a condition

I also know with Tescos if your pet passes away they wont let you cancel the policy until renewal.

& yup Petplan did work out about £5 more for my dog compared to the other companies, but I wouldnt change it, I'm very happy with my cover & the staff have been most helpful during the operations alfie has also had.

But by mitigating the risk of the insurance companies not paying out, you're exposing yourself to the greater risk of an injury/disease that you cannot easily afford.

Case in point - our lab !!!!!. Her parents had good hip scores, KC registered breeder (for what that's worth) but she has hip dysplasia.

Halifax have paid ~£7k for the first hip. There's no reason to believe that they won't pay the £6k for the other hip, if it's required, but even if they didn't it would take 20-30 years to save up for what they have paid for.

Of course it's all about probabilities and expected values and we were unlucky, but it happens.

There's also the public liabilty insurance aspect.
