my dog had a cruciate ligament snap in his right leg 6weeks later the same happened to his left leg . they would only pay for one leg sa thay said it was the same condition even though it was on a seprate leg. SO YOU HAVE A DOG WITH FOUR LEGS BUT IT IS ONLY INSURED FOR THAT ONE CONDITON FOR 1 LEG ONLY. YES TESCO ARE CHEEP BUT BEWARE THAT OLD SAYING YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. STAY WELL AWAY. Its one of the reasons I have always stayed with petplan. Its expensive but the vets all seem to recommend it as it has such good cover.

As the owner of an 8 year old cat, I agree totally with the post above. Petplan does come out expensive when compared with many of their rivals, but they are one of the few to offer pretty much "complete" cover, and of course guaranteed cover for life for that cat or dog also so long as you stay with them. We debated changing her Ladyship to Tesco a few years ago until I enquired what would happen when she go older, and they were not able to reassure me that they wouldn't just refuse to insure her at that stage.

I on the other hand had the opposite problem. Petplan excluded my girls entire respitory and urinary tract for life when she was a puppy. This was becuase she had one bout of cystitus and kennel cough:eek: This was 10 years ago and they would not budge, I phoned Tesco who laughed at the exclusions on a female puppy as they said they were quite common. She has been isured with Tesco ever since and they have paid out roughly £3000 in 10 years and NEVER once put any exclusions on her. I would not go anywere else and is is not because it is cheap it is their good service and the fact that they are the only large insurance company I have ever dealt with that pays promptly and even gives a follow up call to ask how the pet is doing. Petplan on the other hand were ridiculous in their attitude and I would not now touch them with a barge pole. Oh and my vet reccomends them not PP and I do not or ever have worked to Tesco;)

i have always been with Petplan - 1 rabbit and 2 cats (only have one cat left now). they have always been speedy and prompt at payment and have never quibbled over any claims.

the only 2 things that pi%% me off was 1) when one of my cats was a kitten she had the sniffles and had to have anti-biotics - for this, she was excluded for life for any 'upper respiratory' illness or condition; and 2) having been a loyal customer from their early days (1994) i just tried to get a quote for a 13 year old cat i am hoping to adopt - they would only offer me their basic plan, which is crap and is not at all suitable for older pets (or younger pets in my opinion).

I think I may go with axa or greenbee for the adoptee...i was badcially warned to stay away from the supermarket pet insurance policies.

I found the same with PP not giving good enough cover for my cat who will turn 11 in March (Although the dog is with PP) & went with Axa in the end for £7,000 for life cover & £50 fixed excess (No %). They even have £100 for Cremation! It cost me £107 something for the year & looks to be a good policy.

M&S who she used to be with are good too but they have a % + excess which I didn't want!

How can they not pay out for a condition if its in a different limb. Its a bit like saying he cut his foot open on a can and they will not cover his other feet?

It's pretty standard for limited cover policies, and is by no means unique to tesco. It's not quite the same as cutting a paw, because you could argue that the dog has a pre-disposition to weak cruciate ligaments, and it is therefore a pre-existing condition.

However, even in that example, you will find the exact exclusion varies a lot from insurer to insurer, so a cut paw could lead to any future claim on that leg being excluded, or it could be a very specific exclusion that only relates to future claims directly related to the cut.

The basic Tesco policy only gives 12 months cover, and those types of policies are rarely adequate. The extra package provides lifetime cover, but only up to £4,000. I doubt you would get 2 cruciate ops and any future care for that.

Pet insurance policies are ridiculously obtuse, and it's no wonder that people don't always know what they are actually buying. But on the other hand, it can't come as a huge surprise to find out that cheap policies provide less cover.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

I honestly feel pet insurance needs a lot more regulating. Im sure there are lots of people believing they are adequately covered and they are in for a terrible shock.
