Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
    alternate download link 1
    alternate download link 2
    • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
    • The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
    • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

If its running slow still theres a fair possibility it still has some nasties on it (NO program is guaranteed to find EVERYTHING!)
So you really need a decent firewall and anti virus program if you dont already
    Then perhaps try using CCLEANER?
It cleans all the rubbish thats built up on your computer thats not needed and it also shows you the STARTUP programs. If its slow it could also be that something is running on startup thats not needed?
We really need more details though :)

  • here you go .. my first post :-)

    1. right-click on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen

    2. left click on 'task manager'

    3. in the window that appears, at the top select 'processes'

    4. have a look at cpu useage at the bottom, then select the list of processes by memory usage by clicking on 'memory useage' across the top .. (when you click it it will either sort ascending or descending.

    5. tell us how many processes are running (at the bottom), which processes are using the most memory (and how much memory), and tell us which processes are using the most CPU time (sort them by cpu usage)

Also, how much memory does the laptop have? Which operating system? (Vista, XP etc)

There are lots of things to check once you've confirmed you're clear of spyware, malware etc.

I do this for a living so if you want any more help feel free to PM me.

    Hope this helps :-)

    Thanks
    Dave.

If you have the Norton installation CD I'd be tempted to uninstall the Norton Antivirus / Internet Security. That 80MB for Internet Explorer is very very high too.

60 processes isn't too bad for Vista.

To find the installed memory (it won't be 80GB, thats the hard disk) ...

Click on The start button, and right-click on 'computer' and left-click on 'properties'. You'll see the RAM in the window that appears.

The next thing I'd be looking at is the registry but that can be a dangerous place to go poking around.

If we sell a Vista PC, we always go for a minimum of 2GB. RAM is cheap enough now, and Vista really likes 2GB.
