Online Electronics Purchase - What Card?

Hey all, first post!

I'm going to be purchasing about 2k's worth of electronics equipment online in october from a major UK retailer like comet/currys or dixons, and wanted to make sure I get the best cover possible, should there be any issues, and also the best deal.

What type of credit card should I use for this?
I've seen the amex platinum cashback and also the barclaycard cashback card.

Many thanks and great forum.

  • You could save a lot more than you would get in incentives and cashback by shopping around and avoiding Comet/currys etc.

Hey there, yes I take your point on shopping around, I'll certainly be doing that..

It was more the card front, I wasn't sure what card offers the best online shopping protection, should I need to get a replacement/refund and the supplier isn't that interested.

    Thanks for your help.

There are very few (maybe none at all now) cards that offer protection for a refund/replacement. However you do have protection under S75 of the Consumer Credit Act if there is a dispute and your card company is equally responsible for giving you the money back in certain crcumstances

Make sure you register for quidco.com or similar cashback site and shop via the links there to get cashback on the purchases. If buying a TV then John Lewis offer 5 year guarantees as standard and offer cashback via quidco.

I know the the Nationwide Gold Credit Card gives a free 12-month extended warranty on most big electrical/home purchases; don't know if that is any use or if any other cards have similar perks.

Personally I'd rather have the Amex cashback, but then I've had bad experiences with extended warranties from Currys that have put me off them for life.

PS - totally OT, but I recommend the Co-Op Electrical Shop website www.coopelectricalshop.co.uk - they let you reserve a delivery date *before* you pay & text you with a two/three hour delivery slot the day before. They then unpack the new goods by themselves, in your kitchen, check for damage and take away the packaging for recycling.

Far far better delivery service than anyone else I've tried (even John Lewis) where I've had to argue to get them to even bring the goods in into the garden, let alone the house. But YMMV etc etc.

    cheers everyone, really appreciated.

I've got quidco (got to love it!), and will apply for the amex cahback card as suggested.

I spend more time now checking i've got every possible discount/promotion, it probably costs me more in time!! oh well, can't even remember what life was like before the tinternet.

Looks like a amex and quidco double whammy should save me some serious cash on a new tv then.

hmmm slight change of plan. The retailer that i'm using for an upcoming purchase doesn't take Amex, and it's a £1700 spend.

Looks like I need a different card? Any suggestions for the next best thing to the Amex for cashback?

    The Egg card looked interesting...

oh, and is it a good idea to apply for 2 cards at the same time?
  • Did you mean Egg money not Egg card - it is Egg money that has the cashback

lol, yes that's what I meant. The Egg cashback card 1% I think.

Is this the next best alternative to the Amex currently.

And do I have to wait between applying for the two, to protect my credit rating?
