    Should have read Tax Year!

Tax Tear seems a rather good Freudian slip to me! :D

I'm glad I don't pay any Income Tax yet. If we actually get the Estates finalised I will be going to a Tax Accountant - currently I only have my state pension, and it's not enough to pay tax.
  • Hi again Maggie,

Sorry I was reading post no 205 in which you mentioned your late mothers' ITR to date of death and waiting for P60's. Unless she died on 5th April the payer/provider will not issue a P60. I hope this is helpful.

Thanks Angela, I think maybe S2 was talking about previous years. Not sure why those would be needed, but am all at sea in this business anyway! :o Think husband has written to S2 again with latest set of dividend cheques, and is hoping to phone today too if he has time - it's been a bit hectic at his work with people being off because of the snow (not here, but in other branches) so he may not manage to.

We're taking things a bit easy after the huge rush to clear the flat by sale completion date last Friday. I just hope things move on a bit faster now though.
  • Hi Again Maggie,.

I realise you both have been thru' an horrendous time. My expertise is Personal Taxation only--- not IHT or Estate Tax.
If you need any advice in the coming months I will be honoured to help.

    :jHi Maggie

We got a cheque to pay off the last of the inheritance owed to OH. It was £20k short which we discovered was due to them miscalculating the IHT (and landing us with another bill for late payment - 2nd so far). Still OH is happy to have something else to hit them with, when and if we manage a complaint. I am v relieved:rotfl: - but as OH is still so unhappy about the treatment we have received - feel we are not at the end yet. And we have to sign off the accounts - which has peculiar wording suggesting it is all our responsibility - the accounts I mean. Is this usual? As the solicitors have prepared the accounts and we are trusting their work. Any info on this from anyone in the know, would be appreciated.

    Still - it is a milestone:rotfl::T

    Hope all well.

    Hi Trix,

On no account sign off the accounts unless you are happy with them. Check out the legal complaints website, it has something about what to do if you are unhappy with the bill - there's a procedure to follow.

I'm really chuffed that you've had at least part of what you are entitled to. :j  :T

I should update as we've had some movement, but currently in London where we've been attending a Judicial Review at the Royal Courts of Justice. And I am now totally knackered. Very tiring sitting in a stuffy court room, straining to hear Judge and Counsel who seemed to mutter rather than speak out so they could be heard. And no sound system either. Unbelievable.

We decided that we'd celebrate selling the flat while we're in London, so last night we went to see La Cage Aux Folles with Graham Norton. Wow, it was fantastic - I have sore hands this morning from clapping so hard! :D

I do hope that you can get some satisfaction from the Legal Complaints folks. It's so hard when you don't have any help from the professional who is being PAID after all to get the work done correctly.

Best of luck, and do let us know how it goes.

It pretty much goes like this: You put in all the legwork finding out all the information. You send it off to the nice solicitor who fills in a couple of forms that you could have done yourself for nothing with the help of the Probate Registry/HMRC.

Then you pay several thousand pounds for their 'expertise' while you wait for usually the best part of a year before you hear anything. If you have the audacity to ask for any information your bill will increase as they will have to look at your file and write you a letter. In the meantime you sign a disclaimer, so that if there is any comeback from the authorities it will be all your fault and the nice solicitor is completely blameless.

Welcome to the murky world of wills and probate.

When any of you have finally been released fom the clutches of a bad solicitor, you can name and shame them on Solicitors from Hell site.

I suppose people could if they wanted to be sued for libel. The site appears to have been designed by a 12 year old with a potty mouth and no spellchecker.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Oh MonkeySpank - if only it was a couple of thousand - And if only it was a year!

Try couple of tens of thousands and nearly two years.

Yep - do-it-yourself if you can at all manage it - is my advice. I have now spoken to the HMRC - and they have always been very helpful, and have a special helpline for advice on tax for estates of the deceased.

    If only I had known:o

Thanks Mutter - but I really don't want any more trouble with the solicitors. Awful as they are - they probably would sue me for telling the truth.
