Work in progress - Cupcake stand (Star wars)

Ok thanks in advance to Special K for planting these silly ideas in my head.

My son is 6 in about 3 weeks, he has so far wanted a cars party, pokemon party and now settled on a star wars party which is fine by me. So today I bought supplies to make his holder This is a work in progress and at the moment I am struggling to find the correct height for the stand.
Can anyone suggest what I could use to stand each layer? I have toilet rolls on the bottom one which will be covered, then 2 oasis blocks on the middle and top.

Anyway onto the pics.
Decided to be clever and use PVA glue to stick the black fabric (can't get black tissue paper anywhere locally) Anyway this completely screwed it all up and I was almost ready to give in before I had started.

So then decided to start again! This time I pulled the material tight across the cake board and stapled onto the back. Used loads of staples but it works! After covering 3 of my 4 boards I stapled silver ribbon onto the outer edges.

Then put the stands in place I know its not straight, that still needs to be sorted once the poles are complete (I have some fancy honeycombn stuff for these)

The top layer will have a small block of covered oasis and then some sticks coming out of the top with the star wars characters on them. but I will keep updated as I go.

Rusty, looking fab, can't wait to see it finished with all the yummy cakes on.

DD's birthday was tuesday, I made all the cakes and got some piccies (will put them up later) she absolutely loved it and all her friends were amazed which was lovely and made me feel good after the disappointment of not being able to make the quilt for her due to lack of supplies again. Anyway they ate all 50 of the cakes so they must have been okay and she had a fantastic day :D

Dont you think you should tidy the sandwiches off the high chair away first!! HAHAH just kidding :D

Has your son got any star wars figures? You could but them so they are holding up each tier with their arms? Thought it would look cool LOL. perhaps a skewer taped to the back of the figure then stuck in the botton and top tier for stability. I dont know im rubbish.

Just wanted to say.. It looks AWESOME!

Was clicking somewhere else but saw Star Wars and cakes and had to press back and come here :D

    Good luck

    WOW!!
This is looking fantastic ;)! I think black always makes a statement, it will look so cool! I wanna make one now, my OH is Star Wars mad but he refuses to admit it! It happens to be his birthday next week too!

Could you not out a piece of dowelling right down the middle? When I made the ITNG cake, I used cake dowels to hold the top up (I made holes in the board with a corkscrew, then fiddled about til I could push them through. You can sharpen proper cake dowels so they stab into the bottom board.) As you are not going to be eating the actual stand I don't see why you could not use a thin wooden dowel??

It will look really effective once you have this filled with cakes, you can hang stars and planets about the place, cover a wall in bin bags and sticks stars etc on, maybe a happy birthday message made from stars!

Can't wait to see your updates and the finished article.

Well done you and happy fiddling ;)

the outer plastic covers that are used on 50 and 100 cd/dvd disc spindles 50 disc are around 3" inches high and 100 just over 6" as they are clear you can decorate the inside of them ie stick glitter star confetti around the inside of it then just wrap a bit of black paper inside the top which will really make the stars show up! with them being inside you wont get any problems of something not edible dropping onto your cakes

There is also a way of covering cake boards with balloons you get a really perfect edge on the board then but you will have problems if you need to glue anything in place as balloons to not take to being glues too well also you would need to keep them covered in plastic until the day as they start to detoriate as soon as they are inflated.

Hmmm you aren't supposed to notice them. My daughter was being a madam and I was so excited to start it off that I forgot to move her dinner which she refused :rotfl::rotfl:

I have no star wars figures (can't really buy any as he is having star wars stuff for christmas) However I am wanting to print some characters off the net and put them on little sticks to stick in the top so that it looks good ... or at least hopefully looks good. Then try and decorate it with ribbon (probably curling ribbon?)

You are far from rubbish, some fantastic ideas there thankyou.

Oooh you are full of so many Ideas!!! I have some little stars and I can print off maybe the death star or something to put on the black bags. I want it to be tomtoms birthday now lol
Hadn't thought about dowels, will try a couple of other things first then try dowels. Don't want to stab holes in if I don't need to lol. Thankyou for all of your help, I really appreciate it.

Hadn't thought of the dvd spindles, I know there is at least 2 smaller ones upstairs in the office so will have a fiddle tonight and see if I can make them look good. Thanks for the idea.
Not sure about balloons, I am still to find some black and dark blue balloons but everywhere just sells bags of coloured ones!
