    Mortgage-free Glee!
what about medical reasons your licence only runs for 3 years.

I have had a plastic licence since it was first introduced and must be on my 3rd already, I have never had to change my pic and my licence expires in the usual 3 years time? Do I have to update pic?
  • more ways of conning money from the masses, £17.50 what a rip, reminds you of bank charges, totally over priced. rip off goverments.

My licence isn't for renewal til next year but I'm on benefits - £17.50 to me is a lot of money that I can't afford to waste on renewing a picture!!!!

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I'm a little baffled by people who say they can't afford the £17.50. As I said before, that works out to £1.75 a year. A car costs at minimum a few hundred quid a year for MOT and insurance. And then there's petrol on top and the cost of the car to start with. Firstly, the cost of the license is absolutely miniscule relative to this. Secondly, if the license renewal cost is too expensive then how would you pay for repairs if something goes wrong with the car? £17.50 would only buy the cheapest of spare parts if you happen to know someone who can do the work for free.

I'm sorry to sound rude and I don't want to upset anyone in this position, but it just doesn't make sense to me.

If you can't afford £17-50 for your licence how do you go on when you've got a bald tyre (around £50) or anything else that needs replacing? if you can't afford £17-50 should you be running a car?

    Hi there,

Also, with regard to issuing a new licence quickly for 7 day 'producers'. DVLA can issue a new licence as a priority in these cases and get them back to you in time. All you do is explain the situation to the DVLA - that it's needed by the police - & ask for the Urgent Manager's address (these change periodically). Make sure you fill in the D1 correctly (as there will be no time for correcting errors), enclose ID, etc and send it recorded or registered post with a letter explaining the situation to the manager. If you would like them to sent it back recorded post, enclose a recorded SAE or they will just send it back 1st class post (ask for that).
The managers deal with many such requests every single day and will always do their best to try to help. I gave the address out countless times when I worked there.

Hope this has helped (only my second post)

If only I had known that at the time ( though it was 9 years ago). Seems so unfair that poster above (who did not inform of address) did not get extra fine but I did.

Although some of us don`t need to change the paper licence. I am sure that I read in my insurance or break down cover that driving abroad you will have to have a driving licence with a photo in to have the insurance valid.

Forgot to mention in my earlier post, I had to produce my licence to the cops recently which is a photocard, the woman at the station wrote down on the form the date when my car driving entitlement expires and not when my licence expires (i.e. 10 years from issue). Seems like some of the cops don't even know the legislation.

Send them in a new pic when you next renew - you might just get lucky and get pic updated for free!
