morg_monster wrote: »anyone got any idea of prices in the south? at our venue hog roast is an option for the evening, which we like the idea of, but you have to use their supplier and the venue charges £20 per person for it!!! it seems unbelievably expensive even for home counties. Basically I want to go in and say, look, this company would do it for this much (ie loads less), how on earth can you justify this price?!
Guess I probably need to find a company and email them for a quote...
My hog roast was priced for the Cotswolds

I found a company in the cotswolds that do hog roasts and they appear to cover the Midlands although they do say that they will deliver anywhere. I found them when I was doing some research for my assignment. It is a company that I intend to use in the future although I haven't tried any of their products yet. They look to be reasonably priced too and do say how many people a hog or a beef roast will feed either sliced or in rolls.

A quick search has found this company https://www.thehungryhog.co.uk - they are based in West Sussex and supply to most of Kent, Hampshire, London, Surrey, Essex, Berkshire and Dorset.

Where abouts in the South are you morg_monster and for how many guests? Quotes of up to £2000 are crazy! I have never ever charged that much for a hog roast!!
It normally takes between an hour and an hour and half to serve the hog (depending on guests of course and how long it takes people to decide they are hungry!) When the pig arrives it takes between 15-30mins to set up, and then it is ready to go. Once we have served everyone and noone else wants seconds, we tend to cut the rest of the pork and leave it with the remaining rolls so people can pick at it later in the evening. It normally takes 2 people to serve a hog roast, one to carve, one to do rolls, stuffing, sauce etc. If you have salads etc it can be useful to have another person serving too.

The hog roasting companies that I have listed charge sensible prices not stupid London rip off prices of £2000.
Oooh the thought of hot pork and cracklin' is making me feel hungry...now have to go and find something to eat.:D0 -
My Dad had a pig roast from https://www.thebigpig.co.uk and it went down really well. I'm veggie and they even supplied a veggie option and loads of salad too. Would definitely reccommend.0

For all of you having or who have had hog roasts, do the companies usually provide crockery etc and clear up afterwards??
Have visions of being in my wedding dress with a pair of marigolds doing the washing up at the end of the night!"I've fallen down a hole" - said in best Monty Python voice-over.0 -
Hi alleycat
They will say on their website whether or not they provide cutlery etc, most do and they will clear up after themselves.0 -
Thanks Horace, you really are a mine of information! Its so useful having you on this board.
Just need to find a venue that we are happy with and that if their food is expensive will allow us to have external caterers.
For all of you who have had a hog roast, what sort of venue did you have your reception at?"I've fallen down a hole" - said in best Monty Python voice-over.0 -

It's because I am studying to be a wedding planner so I am constantly searching for suppliers. I also use the moneysaving tips on this board to help me with my assignments - my last one was a wedding for a girl with a budget of £3K but she wanted caviar, champagne, 200 guests, an 8 piece orchestra. Needless to say the good tips on here netted me a B grade (my tutor never gives an A:mad: ) Anyway I came to the conclusion a long while ago that my tutor isnt that good - for one thing she never reads what I have written and another thing she has submitted a mark for an assignment I have yet to do:rotfl:0 -
We are having our Hog (if we ever book it!) at the local village hall, however we found it difficult to find a vanue that would go for it!
I think I have found a caterer for the Hog, but I wanted some salads and potatoes on the side..... but they want to charge £3.75 per person for salds etc etc .... and I cant contemplate paying £375 for some lettuce leaves
And then £1.75 for T and coffee..... was wondering if I could borrow / hire / beg/ steal a T urn and then get one of my cousins to circulate with it!
Not sure what to do about the salds as I want a stress free time on the day0
