hog roast??

Hi there
My boyfriend proposed on fri...hooray!!
We are starting to think about food at reception and thinking about hog roast. Did you have one and what was it like? would you recommend?
We are having late wedding at were thinking of having hog roast and buffet?

Congratulations on the proposal, have you set a date? I am sure you will find alot of help and support on here the ladies are lovely. Regarding the hogroast my friend had one a few weeks ago at her wedding, it was scrummy, but went very fast, it was a whole pig too and only around 45 guests?!? She didnt do a buffet with it the company supplied side salad etc.. but i think if i was to do one, i would def put on a proper finger buffet in the evening for the guests, as a few of us was quite hungry, with all the drinking too x x

I used to, and still do occasionally, do hog roasts for weddings. It is a very good and cheap way of feeding a large number of people. If you want to keep the cost down it *should be* slightly cheaper to have a whole pig on a tray than on a spit roast and it looks just as good.

The company I used to work for used to provide a buffet with the pig as well, such as big bowls of salady bits, quiches etc but it would keep the cost down again if you did all that yourself. The pig is provided with a bread roll, apple sauce and stuffing and then people choose their own extra bits to go with it. To be honest, if most people will be having the pig you will probably have too much food if you have a big buffet as well. Alternatively, if you are thinking the buffet would mainly provide just for the vegetarian guests be very careful. At numerous weddings we had been instructed to provide vegetarian food, had to put it out on show as understandably the vegetarians didn't want to come near us and the pig to ask for their food, and all the meat-eaters got to the vegetarian food first!

If you want a hog roast but slightly more 'posh' I have done a few where we sliced the pork onto plates and the buffet consisted of potatos, veg, stuffing and gravy.

My Mom had 2 hog roasts at her wedding instead of a buffet, they went down really well, there was no meat left and I think everyone had at least 2 filled baps. My LO was only about 18mo at the time and she ate stuffing filled baps... I would recommend a few salads or something too, Mom didn't have anything other than hog roast and wedding cake so it was a bit samey...

we had a posh bbq and hog roast and at our wedding.
we opted for a mix so everyone could try something.
we only had 50 to the meal and the hog went quickly and then a buffet in the evening

i would reccomend it to everyone!

We are having hog roast for our wedding next year We are having organic gloucs old spot, rolls, sauce, baked pots, salads and bits to feed 110 for £750. Its a great fun way to have a meal and IMHO better than traditional sit down that costs the earth.

We are also having a ploughmans buffet lunch too x

We want a Hogroast - and have gone as far as getting a few quotes (which are very varied £700 - £2000!!) - but how do I choose one?

Do I need to have a tasting (like you would with a traditional reception food)??

Also, how long does it take to serve and eat a Hog???

We already knew the butcher doing ours and we knew the quality of meat is fantastic but if I didn't know the butcher I would want recommendation and/or a tasting

anyone got any idea of prices in the south? at our venue hog roast is an option for the evening, which we like the idea of, but you have to use their supplier and the venue charges £20 per person for it!!! it seems unbelievably expensive even for home counties. Basically I want to go in and say, look, this company would do it for this much (ie loads less), how on earth can you justify this price?!
Guess I probably need to find a company and email them for a quote...
